I've found the most effective way to make my phone ring is to start inspecting bees πŸ“ž

It works every time.⏰

The phone can be silent for hours, but the moment I've got a hive apart and both hands occupied, somebody suddenly remembers I exist. 🌍

I've no explanation for this. It appears to be one of the fundamental laws of beekeeping. 🐝

Right up there with:

- The queen will always be on the last frame you check.
- And someone will call just as you've found the queen.
- and your hive tool is never where you last left it.

If I don't answer the phone straight away, I will get back to you, but I've probably got 50,000 bees waiting for me and these guys don't like to wait. ✨

Now here's something that surprises a lot of people...

We actually lose money every time we shear sheep.

The shearer needs paying (quite rightly too), the sheep need gathering, sorting and handling, and by the time it's all done, the wool itself is worth very little.

In fact, for many farmers, the value of the fleece doesn't even cover the cost of taking it off the sheep.

Which seems absolutely mad when you think about it.

For thousands of years, wool was one of Britain's most valuable products. Now, a fleece that took a sheep an entire year to grow is often worth less than a cup of coffee.

The sheep still need shearing though. They don't seem too keen on carrying a winter coat around in July. πŸ˜…

So instead of letting these lovely fleeces sit around, we'd love to see them go to people who can actually use them.

We've got whole fleeces available for just Β£5 each.

And before anyone asks, no, they're not sofa-ready! πŸ˜‚ They are raw fleeces straight from the sheep, exactly as nature intended.

People use them for all sorts:

🌱 Around plants and vegetables to suppress weeds and hold moisture
🌱 Hanging baskets and planters
🌱 Compost heaps
🌱 Natural slug deterrent
🧢 Spinning and felting projects
🐦 Nesting material for birds
🏑 Insulation and craft projects
🌳 Protecting young trees and plants

Honestly though, it's a bit sad to think that such a natural, renewable product has become almost worthless. The sheep spend all year growing it, we spend all day taking it off, and nobody seems to want it anymore.

So if you'd like to give one of our fleeces a second life, send us a message β™₯️

Turns out "just trust us, it's honey" isn't a labelling policy anymore πŸ―πŸ˜‚

The EU has introduced new rules meaning honey blends now have to state which countries the honey comes from and how much comes from each one.

As a beekeeper, I think that's a good thing.

I'm not anti-imports. I'm pro-knowing-what-you're-buying.

If I'm spending my days getting stung, lifting heavy honey supers and worrying about the weather, I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for a level playing field πŸ˜…πŸ

Hopefully the UK follows suit. More transparency for customers, fairer competition for beekeepers, and less "mystery honey" on the shelves.

Seems like common sense to me. 🍯

🐝 Well... this doesn't happen very often!

Usually our 90-minute Beekeeping Experiences at Canalside CafΓ© disappear faster than a bee can find a patch of flowers, and most dates have been fully booked well in advance.

But thanks to a few last-minute cancellations (and us being persuaded to add a couple of extra dates!), we've suddenly got some spaces available.

If you've been thinking "I'd love to have a go at that one day" then consider this your sign from the bee gods. 🐝✨

Come and spend 90 minutes with us getting up close to the bees, learning what they're up to, peeking inside a working hive, and discovering why we never stop talking about them. No experience needed, just a bit of curiosity and a willingness to wear a very fashionable bee suit.

The newly available dates are live on our website now, but if previous years are anything to go by, they won't hang around for long.

See you at the hive! 🍯

Book now!! Go Go Goooooooo........
