When the weather changes, the whole sugar supply chain feels it.

Thailand’s sugar production could fall by at least 17% in the 2026–27 season, with output potentially dropping below 10 million tonnes. Dry weather and farmers switching away from sugarcane are just two factors putting pressure on production.

It’s a reminder of how events in the field can have consequences far beyond the producer. Climate change and weather events such as El Niño can affect crop yields, farmer livelihoods and global supply, before those pressures reach manufacturers and, ultimately, consumers.

For the food and beverage industry, understanding what is happening at the source is increasingly important as supply chains become more exposed to changing conditions.

El Niño can also affect the carbon performance of sugar ingredients.

Lower cane yields, lower recoverable sugar, delayed crushing, reduced beet output and tighter stocks can all reduce the inventory buffer available to buyers. Sri Lanka is set to strengthen its sugarcane sector through new technical cooperation with Brazil.

The Sri Lankan Cabinet has approved a proposal to sign a complementary agreement with Brazil to support a sugarcane project, building on the Technical Cooperation Agreement between the two countries signed in 2008.

The collaboration will bring together the Brazilian Cooperation Agency, Federal University of São Carlos, Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development and the Sugarcane Research Institute, with the aim of supporting the implementation of the project through technical cooperation.

Drought is adding further uncertainty to the outlook for the 2026 UK sugar beet harvest.

Farmers Weekly reports that the national harvest could be as much as 25% below an average year, with growers describing extremely poor crop prospects. With harvesting still around a month away, the final outcome remains uncertain.

India does not have a sugar shortage, but prices are telling a different story.

India’s sugar prices have risen by more than 40% in two months, reaching record highs. However, according to the Indian Sugar Mills Association, the increase is being driven by speculative buying rather than an actual shortage of sugar.

Stocks are considered sufficient to meet demand during the upcoming festival season, while the government has also allowed 1 million tonnes of duty-free raw sugar imports to help stabilise the market.

With India forecast to produce 27.9 million tonnes of sugar this season, the latest developments highlight how market sentiment can influence prices even when physical supply currently remains available.
