What a well written and educational posting. Well done! I hope many take on board the much wider picture and understand the circle of life!

This lovely lad is coming to the end of his time, and it’s okay to feel a little sad about that.

He was born on a dairy farm we know, reared by us then sold on as a 6 month old weanling to one of our B&B farmers, who has cared for him ever since.

Between us, we’ve known him his entire life. That isn’t unusual or special, it’s how the vast majority of British farms work. Animals are known, handled, and cared for by people who take that responsibility seriously.

He has never lived in fear. Never gone without food, shelter or medical care. His life has been calm, predictable and well managed, not stressed, not rushed, not scared.

That’s why he’s quiet and confident now. And that matters, because his final journey will be the same, calm, controlled, and humane. It will be quick. He will not suffer. He will not know fear.

It’s okay to feel sad about that. Farmers do too. Often more than people realise, because we know these animals personally. We remember them small. We watch them grow. And sending them on their final journey is never “nothing”.

But it is also part of a bigger circle. If animals like him weren’t farmed, they simply wouldn’t exist. His life was not accidental, it was purposeful, valued, and cared for from start to finish. And that life feeds far more than just people who eat beef.

Even those who don’t eat meat benefit from livestock farming. Manure feeds the soil that grows crops. By-products become fertiliser, biofuels, leather, gelatine, pet food, pharmaceuticals, medical products, even everyday items people never think twice about.

Livestock farming supports ecosystems, soil health, and food production well beyond what ends up on a plate.

This is British farming at its best.

A life lived well, welfare first, respect always. And a humane, dignified end. It’s not wrong to feel sad. And it’s not wrong to recognise the good in a system that provides food, supports the land, and values the animals within it.

That’s the circle.

So yes, it’s sad, and it should be. Because a life that was well lived deserves to be noticed, and a job done with respect deserves to be understood.
