Returning nutrients back to the land

Last week we have been applying liquid digestate to crops of wheat and grass. Digestate is a nutrient-rich by-product from the anaerobic digestion process and provides valuable nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to growing crops. By using it, we can reduce our reliance on expensive artificial fertilisers while making the most of nutrients already produced within the farming system.

As well as feeding the crop, digestate also helps improve soil structure and increase organic matter, supporting healthier soils and more productive land over time.

A look at spring fieldwork 🌱

Here we’re applying liquid fertiliser to our winter barley, giving the crop the nutrients it needs as it starts its main growing period. The machine doing the job is the Fendt Rogator 645, which allows us to apply fertiliser accurately and evenly across the field and came from our friends at Compass Tractors. Fendt Compass Tractors

While some fertiliser on the farm comes from our AD plant in the form of digestate, different crops and fields sometimes require different nutrient sources, so this application is liquid fertiliser.

Modern equipment like this helps us apply exactly what’s needed, where it’s needed, reducing waste and improving efficiency.

Crops for energy

The farm grows wheat, barley, maize and grass as energy crops to fuel an anaerobic digester. These crops provide a sustainable source of biomass, which is converted into biogas. Digestate a nutrient-rich by-product which acts as a natural fertiliser, reducing our need for artificial inputs and helping to improve our soil’s health and vitality.

Looking after the land

Caring for the land is extremely close to our heart. Through regenerative practices, we’re breathing new life into the soil, making farmland more resilient, and giving a big boost to biodiversity, resulting in all kinds of wildlife making our farmland its home.

As well as being extremely rewarding, our environmental endeavours have not only helped natural ecosystems to thrive, they have also increased agricultural productivity.

Summer is rarely still on the Farm, drills moving, crops growing, fields changing day by day.

What you don’t always see: the planning, precision and care that goes into every field of crop.
