I just can’t win

Honey-mustard glazed cocktail sausages, parmentier potatoes, salad Today we went over to the hospital for mum's latest appointment with the rheumatologist. In the taxi over there, I swear the conversation went: Mum: "There used to be a lady I knew who lived round here. I haven't seen her in ages, why haven't I seen her?" Me: "I'm going to invite her over for a cup of tea next week."...

More holiday snaps

Jacket potato with cheese and salad Right, where did I leave things yesterday? Ah yes: pizza. Sunday night was spent dozing then waking, dozing then waking, over and over again. Unsurprisingly, then, I was very tired and not in much mood for doing anything. I sat and read in my room until it was time to check out, then headed down to…...

Holiday snaps

Chicken nuggets, chips, veg Not so much a coherent post as a selection of anecdotes from my weekend away. Friday morning I got up, all ready to go. Mum refused to get up, citing a headache, a stomachache, toothache, pain in her chest, and anything else she could think of that might stop me from leaving the house. My refrain became "I'm sorry it hurts, mum, but I'm still going"....

Can anyone remember what it means when the sky is this colour? It's been so long since I last saw it that I seem to have forgotten. 🤷‍♂️

A long and tiring day. Any kind of travel is a reminder that the world isn't set up for disabled people, from restaurants with no toilets on the ground floor to random steps everywhere you go.

Anyway, here are some photos, as promised.

The cat who’s a hat

Crispy potato slices and Mediterranean vegetable salad Early this morning, just as it was starting to get light, I woke with the odd feeling of wearing a fur hat. It was, of course, Suki, who had decided that sleeping on my pillow was her new favourite place to be. In this weather (currently yet another heatwave in southern England) the last thing I need is a hat, let alone one made of warm, living fur, so I reluctantly shooed her away....

Near total eclipse

Brie and bacon roll with salad This morning I drifted awake to find I was peacefully hugging a teddy bear. A teddy bear that had green eyes, and purred. 😻 Then mum called through the door "aren't you going to get up?" and my peace evaporated into irritation and resentment. Sadly those emotions coloured most of my interactions with mum for the rest of the day, and I found myself pulling away so as to not snap....

Hyperbole failed

Fajita chicken with Mexican veg One of the first things that mum said to me was "someone is coming today - who is it?" I told her it Lady Friday would be here, and we would also have a visit from a solicitor but I would explain more about that later, when she was more awake. With hindsight, I should have said nothing, as mum pestered me until I gave in and told her that the solicitor was coming to do the paperwork for a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) for her health....

Sitting on my bed, and glanced up just in time to see a red squirrel running straight at the glass door from the garden. It hit, bounced off with a startled squeak, and vanished among the many pots on the patio, leaving me wondering if I imagined the whole thing!
