As part of Portland Wines Summer Series we’ll be uncorking a bottle each week for you to sample in store. So, if you’re wondering what these summer ready wines taste like, pop into the shop and find out. We’re sure you’ll find a new summer favourite.

Over the summer we’ll be showcasing 6 countries, explaining some of the history, the regions and role they play in the wine as well as spotlighting our favourite summer wines from the country.
So come on down and travel the world, in wine.

This week’s selection is Cantine Paolini Nero d'Avola. At just £11.99 a bottle this is a 100% Nero d'Avola at 12.0% ABV from the Cantine Paolini Estate.

Founded in 1964 in Marsala, Sicily, Cantine Paolini began as a cooperative of local winemakers including Gaspare Baiata in the historic Paolini district, with their first harvest in 1972. The name originates from the Paolini district, where the monastic order Paolotti began cultivating vineyards in the 16th century.

This wine’s colour is lively ruby red with violet hues, intense and moderate transparency. The aromas that stand out on the nose are the primary ones characterized by fruits and flowers typical of the grape, notes of morello cherry, plum and violet. Pleasant and light aromas. On the palate it is harmonious with elegant tannins and medium persistence with flavours of small berries.

It goes well with a wide variety of dishes rich in flavour, from both white and red grilled meat, to well aged cheeses. Also excellent for appetizers of cold cuts and savoury cold cuts.

This week’s selection is Ca Vescovo Sauvignon Blanc Friuli
At just £15.59 a bottle this 100% Sauvignon Blanc is a 12.5% ABV wine from the Ca’ Vescovo Estate.
Located between the Anfora and Aussa rivers, it was donated in M###VI (1036) by Patriarch Poppone to the Benedictine monastery of Aquileia and for over seven centuries it was reserved for the benefit of the rural communities of San Martino, Terzo and Cervignano del Friuli. The estate that is home to Ca’ Vescovo, composed of 358 fields, belonged to Count Antonio Herberstein, Bishop of Trieste. After him, it passed into the hands of Countesses, Princes and Barons, until the present day, which sees Ca’ Vescovo as
part of the Ca’ Bolani Estate in Cervignano del Friuli.

This wine has a golden yellow colour tending to greenish with a delicate aroma of tropical fruits and herbs,a fresh zesty flavour, complemented by vibrant acidity with a pleasantly velvety mouthfeel.

A wine suitable for first courses, well flavoured soups and fish.

We’ll have a bottle open in store, ready for you to taste during the week of the 8th to the 14th of June so pop in and discover your new summer favourite.

Next in our Summer Series, we move further east to Friuli Aquileia.

This historic region has over 2,000 years of winemaking heritage dating back to the Roman Empire and is particularly celebrated for its elegant white wines.

The area’s sea influenced climate and mineral rich soils help produce wines that are fresh, floral and beautifully balanced.

If you enjoy Sauvignon Blanc with crisp citrus notes and vibrant acidity, Friuli Aquileia is well worth discovering.

Italian white wines continue to shine during the summer months and this region is a perfect example of why.

We’re open Wednesday to Saturday: 12pm – 8pm and Sunday: 12pm – 6pm.

Pop into the shop or order from anywhere in the UK - with delivery available and free delivery Wed-Sun for our local customers in the PR8 and PR9 Postcode area.
