Thats not supposed to look like that 🤣, water heater packed up for the parlour today. We've very hard water here. So it eats immersion heaters for fun. We've tried water softener and all sorts over the years doesn't make much difference. We just have to put up with swopping the elements. Now getting them out was fun, full of chalk so was just twisting around in the chalk inside mangling it up. Today's when a farmer has to become an electrician/plumber. Its all working now 👌.

Beef heifers looking well there on some silage aftermath now. Old Meadows where they are so some mown fresh ground am sure there pleased to be grazing

First batch of dry cows onto the standing hay. Every year we grow 6 acres of what we call standing hay, to strip graze with the dry cows pre calving and during calving. Its long fibre and keeps there rumen full, which is whats needed when a cows calving. We sometimes feed a bit of straw or haylage with it but do aim and challenge ourselves not too. These are the cows calving in the first 3 weeks, the incalf heifers will join them in next few days too so everyone that needs watching are together. This time we cut a strip in the field and baled it as a starting point for the cows, to stop them treading the first bit in.

The rest of the dry cows are still on tidy up duty there going to go eat the sides of the silage fields we've just cut. We'll put an electric fence down the sides of the fields to stop them wondering everywhere and to make them eat the long grass around the edges. Its a bit of work but can't afford to waste anything 🫣. Its a pleasant job too 😊 got to like moving electric fencing on a grazing system 😀.

Chickens are on a stand off too trouble with light nights we want to shut them in, they think different 🤣

Fertiliser today we haven't done any since putting some on after 1st cut. We've decided to put a small amount across everything pre mown and silaged. Calving is coming so we didn't want to over do the fert and have to cut more of the grazing, it would be nice to have a modest amount of grass in front of the cows, well thats the idea, but when does farming work out 🤣 . We can only try 🤞.

We've more cows dry now then actually milking. There is heifers changing in the udders now so won't be long away now until first calf for the season arrives.

All in. 309 bales this time, even pulled my mum out of retirement 🤣, vicky and my mum carting myself loading again. 890 bales now last year we only made 760 all year. Its a relief to have it especially when the milk price is low. Last thing we would need is to buying feed in. Amazing what a bit rain can do. I'd imagine 2nd cut will be couple weeks off. So probably will need mowing as we start calving to add some more pressure on.

We've a small number of eggs available for any locals, the kids have been making signs.

£2 a box of 6.

We are trying to be fair priced, but the cost of feed these days is stupid. 🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓

The overseeding was a success. I was worried when we did it if it would just grow dandelions. We had out wintered some heifers on this field till march then harrowed and broadcast some seed on. Its come good in end this is a very light soil field. I don't think it would have worked as well if we had a dry time. Its a field that burns up bad but reacts fast to rain.
