We chose this place based on the reviews, but unfortunately it was probably one of the worst Sunday dinners I’ve had.

The staff were lovely and very quick to see to you, so no complaints there. The starters were okay, but you can’t really go wrong with brie and soup. The pork and beef were nice to be fair, but the rest of the meal really let it down.

You basically got the meat, a Yorkshire pudding, frozen roast potatoes, parsnip, carrot, cabbage and broccoli. The menu also said mash would be included, but there wasn’t any.

Overall, it just didn’t live up to the reviews for us.
2/10 from us.

Hjem at South Causey

Our favourite restaurant is doing a 6-month pop-up in The Farmhouse at South Causey – and what a setting 😍 Absolutely beautiful inside and out.

We started with five starters to share:
• Sourdough with salted butter
• Leek & potato soup
• Liver pâté
• Salmon
• A delicious cheese ball (name totally escaped me 🤦🏼‍♀️)

For mains, the chicken was outstanding – so tender and full of flavour. The beef was lovely too, but the chicken was definitely our favourite.

Dessert was a chocolate mousse… another 10/10 from us.

If you get the chance to go, do it. Such a special experience ✨

The club house at rockcliff hall

We had a lovely walk down to The Clubhouse as we were staying in the hotel, which made the whole experience feel relaxed from the start.

Our waitress was warm and attentive — great service throughout.

For starters, I chose the crab cakes which were absolutely delicious — fresh, well-seasoned and full of flavour. Kevin had the seafood cocktail and really enjoyed that too. A strong start.

For mains, we decided to share the steak. At £120, we were expecting something exceptional, but unfortunately it was quite disappointing. The cut was very fatty and not what you’d anticipate at that price point. The sides were nice enough, but they didn’t make up for the steak itself.

Thankfully, we were on a package and received £80 off the bill, which definitely softened the blow.

Overall: lovely setting, great service, strong starters — but the steak didn’t match the price tag.

Davey’s Newcastle

The café is done out in a modern, funky style with a great atmosphere. It was a little cold when we visited for breakfast, which took the edge off slightly. There was also around a 40-minute wait for our food.

That said, everything we ordered was very tasty and clearly well made. The only downside was my husband’s eggs, which were unfortunately cold, as though they had been sitting for a while.

Despite those small issues, we really enjoyed it and would definitely return.

Propa at Sheepfolds Sunderland

The queue was huge, but to be fair it moved pretty quickly. One downside straight away is the menu positioning — you can’t actually see it properly until you’re almost at the till, which makes ordering a bit rushed.

We went for the mince & dumplings and the chicken & chorizo pie, both served with mash and gravy. Presentation-wise, everything looked spot on… but flavour-wise it didn’t quite live up to how good it looked.
• Chicken & chorizo pie: 7/10
• Mince & dumplings: 6/10

Not bad by any means, just not the best pie I’ve had. We’d definitely give it another go, but probably not on a Sunday — we’d like to try it again when the full menu is on to get a better feel for what they really do best.

Filto, Jesmond
First visit and honestly such a find. I couldn’t decide, so I went for the shakshuka — beautifully spiced, rich, and full of flavour. Kevin chose the ’nduja eggs, perfectly balanced with just the right amount of heat. Every bite was spot on, bold flavours done really well. An easy 10/10 from us. 🍳✨ really good value for money too £39

The Rat Inn, Hexham

Set in a beautiful location, this country pub is quite charming and has a lovely atmosphere. The menu is not extensive, but there is plenty of choice.

We started with the lamb flatbread, which was delicious and full of flavour. We also ordered six Shetland oysters; unfortunately, these were disappointing. They hadn’t been properly shucked and there was very little meat.

For mains, the cod dish was tasty and well cooked. The pork chop with black pudding was lovely and definitely the standout dish. The cheese board, however, was underwhelming.

Overall, despite a few letdowns, we would definitely return.

Hakkasan Dubai

With Atlantis having four Michelin-starred restaurants, we decided to try two during our stay, with Hakkasan being one of them.

The restaurant itself is very modern with a cool, funky vibe — definitely a great atmosphere. Unfortunately, that’s where it ended for us. The full meal was really underwhelming. Not one dish made us say “wow, that’s amazing” — everything was just… okay.

I genuinely don’t understand why it has a Michelin star. In our opinion, it’s no better than many Pan-Asian restaurants we’ve been to, and places like Asia Asia, Sexy Fish, and Tattu are far superior.

Overall, we’d give it 6/10 and for us it was absolutely not worth £400. Disappointing, especially with the expectations that come with a Michelin star.

They must give out Michelin stars over here like dentist stickers coz I am baffled why it’s got one had better pan Asian in avika in the toon 🤦🏼‍♀️😂
