Summer Swallow Flight

I have so enjoyed our summer soundtrack of birdsong and the swooping, swirling dance of swallows in the sky. They seem even more active than usual this week — swooping, diving and weaving around the garden, catching insects on the wing.

I wonder if they’re getting ready for the big journey south?

Over the next few weeks, our swallows will begin leaving Scotland, heading south through Europe and on towards Southern Africa. With such a long journey ahead, I hope they’re stocking up on plenty of Scottish insects while they can!

I’m going to miss being dive-bombed while working in the garden. There’s something rather wonderful about having these tiny, incredibly agile travellers constantly dancing through the sky above you.

The thought of these tiny birds heading all the way to South Africa feels particularly special — a little connection between our Scottish garden and where some of Michael’s family are, on the other side of the world. ❤️🌍

We’ll miss them when they leave. Wishing them good preparations and, when the time comes, a safe journey south — and we’ll always look forward to seeing them back here again in spring.

We’re open today (Saturday) 8.30am–3pm — and we’ve got plenty of fresh, seasonal goodies ready for you! 🥕🥬

Believe it or not, we’re officially halfway through the CSA season! Today is the last collection day in August, which means 4 months of veg down and 4 months of veg still to go in the 2026 season. It’s hard to believe how quickly the season is flying by!

🌱 FARM SHOP OPEN EARLY TOMORROW! 🌱

After the success of last Saturday’s earlier opening, we’ve decided to continue with it — so tomorrow the farm shop will be open 8.30am–3pm!

So we will be busy harvesting today and there’s something new on the shelves this week…

🌶️ Our first peppers! 🌶️

Peppers are a very slow-growing crop, and getting them to ripen in Aberdeen is definitely a test of patience! So we’re particularly excited to have our first pick ready this week.

We’re growing two varieties: Mountain Roaster, a long red pepper from Seeds of Scotland, and Flynn, a small lunchbox-style pepper from Tamar Organics.

It’s always exciting when a new crop makes it through to the farm shop for the first time — especially one that has taken such a long time to get there!

So if you’re up and about tomorrow, come and see us from 8.30am–3pm and stock up on fresh, locally grown veg for the weekend. 🌱

🌱 The seasons are changing…

We’re into the last few days of August, and the tunnels are starting to show that we’re somewhere between summer and autumn. This is what the tunnels look like at the moment: a mixture of the old and the new.

This time of year involves a surprising number of difficult decisions. As September progresses, the daylight hours shorten and temperatures drop, and plant growth slows down more and more. If we want to get new crops established in the tunnels — salads and greens that we can harvest through autumn and winter — they need to go in as soon as possible, while there is still enough warmth and light for them to establish well.

But that often means having a long internal debate about when exactly to pull out the crops that have served us so well over the summer.

Have the climbing French beans had their time, with yields getting lower each pick? Is it time to pull out the tunnel courgettes now that they’re producing more slowly? Should we sacrifice the aubergines, which have struggled with fungal disease this year? If I pull out that bed of summer salad to make room for a winter crop, will we have enough other leaves to get us through until the new ones are ready? And is the squash mature enough to come out yet?

There’s always the temptation to keep a crop going for just a little bit longer — after all, those plants could still produce something. But at some point, keeping an old crop in the ground can mean sacrificing the opportunity to establish the next one.

So much of growing is about finding that balance: getting the most from the crops you have, while making space for what’s coming next.

It can be surprisingly hard to pull out plants that are still capable of producing, but sometimes the most productive thing you can do is make room for the next season. 🌱
