After an incredible 48 years with Arkell’s, yesterday we said a heartfelt “cheers” to Phil Mercer as he retired from his full-time role — on his 65th birthday. 🍻
Phil began at Arkell’s in the 70s in the cask wash, under the watchful eye of his dad, Lou. From there, he moved up to the brewhouse.
Then, for the past 35 years in Technical Services, Phil has been the familiar face our pubs have relied on — turning up when something breaks, leaks, explodes, or simply refuses to behave. Always on call, he’s been there making sure the beer kept flowing.
His send-off was full of warmth, humour, and heartfelt thanks from colleagues, friends, and long-standing suppliers who’ve been part of the journey.
The good news? This isn’t goodbye. Phil will still be leading our weekly brewery tours and popping up at events, sharing his knowledge, stories, and passion.
Cheers, Phil — thank you for everything. Enjoy your well-earned retirement! 🍺
