Thank you to everyone for all the well wishes and support we have received on this milestone and world first achievement. Orkney Creel Fishery is officially the first fishery in the world to be certified by The Community Catch Standard and we at Orkney Crab are delighted to have played a significant role in this certification process.

We had a wonderful evening celebrating alongside industry partners, valued customers, local fishermen and key representatives from government, councillors and Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

Special thanks to Linda Wood CEO of Community Catch and her team for driving this initiative for small-scale fisheries, often met with barriers to other certifications, and ultimately thanks to the fishermen in Orkney who maintain the highest standards of environmental and social practices. Together, by protecting our people and place we are working hard to preserve this heritage industry and help support our local community for generations to come.

We’re incredibly proud to announce that Orkney Crab has played a key collaborative role in helping the Orkney Creel Fishery become the first fishery in the world to achieve Community Catch certification.

This certification gives consumers confidence that our crab is sourced to the highest standards of responsible environmental and social practices. We look forward to continuing to showcase Orkney Crab on the world stage and are honoured to have helped establish a new benchmark for how seafood can be harvested, handled and celebrated in a way that supports both people and place.

Orkney Crab Soup on the menu in Hokkaido

In 2024 a small group of Japanese post grad students came to Orkney through a summer programme run by Robert Gordon University and sponsored by Nippon Foundation. Their itinerary included Skaill House, where they also heard about OJA. Afterwards we were contacted by a member of ISARIBI, a student group in Hakodate, interested in learning about Orkney and also telling us about their town.

At about 10 times the size of Orkney in population, Hakodate is Hokkaido’s third largest town, and was the first Japanese port to open to foreigners in 1854. For a time it was the most important northern port in Japan and, like Orkney, played a strategic role in the history of its country.

We started talking about the traditional foods of both places, and OJA sent them a recipe for Orkney Crab soup (kindly supplied by Orkney Crab in Stromness) and got this message from them a few days ago:

"I am writing to share some wonderful news regarding the recent Hakodate Food Festival. We served the Orkney crab soup recipe you shared with us, and it was a great success. Many visitors found the soup unique and thoroughly enjoyed it. Furthermore, there was a high level of interest in Orkney Crab, and the event served as a fantastic opportunity for people in Hakodate to learn about the Orkney Islands.” Mikihiro Hiramatsu
