Who are we? What makes us unique?
In September 2016, Stroud Micro Dairy was nothing but a wonderful dream. We’d no water, no electricity, no farmyard, no milking parlour, no tracks and ex-arable land in need of TLC. But this suited us just fine for our aim was, and remains, to heal land and grow soils, that magical and precious living crust on the surface of our planet in which our food grows and without which few species could survive. We therefore practice regenerative agriculture to produce our award-winning raw milk, yoghurt and kefir; we promote soil and plant health through biodiversity and the balance of natural systems. To this end our ‘girls’ are on grass all year round, which means that our milk is extra lush.
We also operate a community supported agriculture model (CSA) to build transparency, sustainability and resilience into our food systems; we work in partnership with the 230 ‘members’ we supply. They visit the farm, know how their food is produced and, we hope, take pride in supporting positive farming. Our job as farmers would be far harder and lonelier without the daily contact with our members we are now used to.
Finally, we practice a calf-at-foot system, which means that we keep both the female and male calfs suckling their mums until they are weaned. It’s a challenge, but it just feels right to us.
