Have we angered the Batman/women of Stroud?! 🦇😂

A slightly odd one this morning…

A rather mysterious message has been thrown over our wall on a whiteboard! 😳

As many of you know, this building was unbelievably derelict when we took it on. It had sat for years pretty much untouched, with no stairs to the upper floors — basically the land that time forgot! Something straight out of a scary film. 👻

Because of the state of the building, Stroud Council quite rightly insisted on a bat survey.

So… we had a day survey, a night survey, and then TWO bat people camped out either side of the building to monitor for any activity. 🦇

After a fair amount of time, at exactly the right time of year, and at a cost of thousands of pounds, the verdict was in…

NO BATS.
Not in the building.
Not previously in the building.
No bats were harmed, disturbed or even apparently interested in our bakery! 😂

The all-clear was given and we cracked on with turning the place into SALT.

So, to put the record straight…

NO BATS WERE HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THIS BAKERY! 🦇🥐

Hopefully that gets Batman and Batwoman off our backs.

I’m a little scared now though… 😳🤣

Anyway… back to the bread and pastries! 🥐🍞

Reflecting this morning on our last pop-up yesterday before we take the plunge and properly open the doors to SALT in September 🧂

There’s been a little bit of confusion about when we’re actually opening, so we thought we’d clear a few things up!

WHEN ARE YOU OPEN?

We’re opening fully in September 🎉

Wednesday–Saturday
8am–2pm

We’ll run this way up to Christmas, then take a short break and reassess how things are going.

DO YOU DO ANYTHING OTHER THAN SWEET PASTRIES?

Yes! 😂

For these soft openings and pop-ups we’ve deliberately kept things simple while we figured everything out.

We’re new to coffee, and getting that side of things right has been a big learning curve in itself!

When we open properly, the menu will grow and will include things like pizza, sandwiches and more savoury food, with the aim of eventually having a full café menu.

ARE YOU DOG FRIENDLY?

Yep. 100% 🐶

Dogs are very welcome, but please keep them on leads and come with the knowledge that there may be other dogs in the café too!

WHERE ARE YOU?

📍 28 Slad Road, Stroud

We’re just past the Co-op at the bottom of Uplands, directly opposite the park.

DO YOU HAVE PARKING?

We don’t have any customer parking, unfortunately.

We are, however, only a short walk from several town car parks.

And finally…

A massive THANK YOU to everyone who came down yesterday. It was unbelievably busy and we absolutely loved having you all there. ❤️

And a huge thank you to our brilliant staff who have worked so hard to help make the bakery happen. We genuinely couldn’t do it without you.

We’re also sorry if our pop-ups have caused any confusion about whether we were already open.

We really needed these days to figure things out — to make the mistakes, learn what works, work out the coffee flow, see what people want and hopefully make SALT a whole lot better once we’re up and running full-time.

So that’s the plan…

🚨 FINAL POP-UP AT SALT HQ 🚨

As we move forward with our SALT HQ at 28 Slad Road, tomorrow — Saturday 22nd August — is our FINAL POP-UP! 🧂🥐☕️

We’re still working things out and currently running a mainly pastry & bread offering, with a few savoury bits thrown in too. We’ll be fully loaded tomorrow and ready to welcome you through the doors 8am–1pm.

And of course, the coffee machine will be banging out the finest , roasted just 2 miles from the bakery. We’re incredibly proud to be using Noni at SALT ❤️

Whether you’re post-parkrun, pre-shopping trip, or just fancy seeing what we’re up to, pop in, grab some bread and come have a nose around our new home.

A few things to expect…

We’re STILL learning! 😂

Our last pop-up gave us some very valuable lessons around ordering, layout and workflow — so we’ve learned loads, but there’s still a way to go!

☕️ We’re still working on our workflow to keep the coffees flying out
🍽️ We’re using disposable cups & plates for now
🥐 The menu will continue to grow as we get into the swing of things
🏗️ We’re still figuring out this beautiful building and how best to use it!

So thank you for bearing with us while we find our feet.

We know this has all taken some time, and the support, patience and excitement from Stroud has been absolutely unbelievable. ❤️

We’ll still be fully loaded at Stroud Market, and our van is still in Thornbury with our besties The Yard.

We really hope to see some of you tomorrow. We’re always ridiculously excited to show you around our beautiful new building — somewhere we’re incredibly proud to call SALT HQ.
