Happy September Sunday!

Farming happiness is a mixed (livestock and crops), sustainable system.

We operate an almost closed loop whereby the animals (pigs in the background in this shot) fertilize the land then used for veg, fruit and flower production.

Resource sharing has to be the way forward: animal manure enhances the soil biology and waste crops feed the livestock.

We have side-stepped the need for any environmentally and economically expensive chemical fertilisers. We do however use a bit of diesel for some tractor work but would love to return to horse drawn implements. In this picture Will is harrowing the previous pig ground before sowing green manure (a cover crop on bare ground that enhances soil biology and is then incorporated into the ground); another natural way to fertilise.

Having a mixed farm encourages greater wildlife biodiversity and hopefully more economic resilience. And a happy farmer!

Not one, but two rainbows 🌈 on this classic British Bank Holiday Monday!

If you would like to see how things have greened up in the market garden then take the video tour. It’s a little pestulant but that is the reality of organic farming.

The vegetables might be less polished and perfect to behold but they are more nutritious, environmentally friendly and chemical free. What’s not to like about that?

A twist on our beautiful buddha bowls this week: delicious, nutritious, sustainable salade nicoise.

Delicious being a gorgeous recipe from Philippa Davis, Home Cooking published in BBC Food | Fun, simple and delicious

Nutritious and sustainable because every single vegetable is organic and grown right here on the farm: salad, french beans, cucumber, tomato, red onions, herbs and potatoes. Sooo seasonable.
The eggs are from our lovely organic feathered ladies

We are excited to be selling tins and are using their ethically caught line and pole tuna in this dish. Packed with omega 3 oils. Essential because we cannot make this fatty acid ourselves.

All topped with a vinaigrette made using the awesome olive oil from our local business Avlaki, also available in the shop.

Available to eat in or take away

A new camping venture? No (but watch this space 💥⛺️😁)! French squatters on site?? Non!

Thank you to our wonderful Friday volunteers who helped bring in the magnificent shallot and onion harvest.

Despite the long dry spell and fairly superficial roots of the onion, it has been a really good harvest. We cannot quite understand it as we barely watered them. It may be down to the excellent homemade composted farmyard manure that provided nutrients and a mulch’s but not everything that has been planted in it has faired so well this summer.

The bulbs have been drying well outside but with some much wanted rain around we needed to get them undercover. With full barns a tent seemed the perfect solution!

Please share this post far and wide to spread the word - thank you!

Are they having a Blue Sunday after a wild Saturday night? A young friend recently observed that blue flowers are like crack to bees!

Blue is indeed a big draw to these busy creatures. We see large numbers on the borage, cornflowers, globe thistle and these flowering globe artichoke heads. They seem to be particularly mesmerised by such beautiful displays, often sleeping overnight, head down in the artichokes, true festival style!

And apparently nature has a plan: blue flowers often have more nectar to feed the bees; and the petals have tiny patterns to guide them in whilst the bees have vision geared towards spotting the blue hue
