Hands up if you had this pencil case?

Pencil and cases and putting your hand up, it can only mean one thing, it’s time to go back to school.

Good luck to everyone back in the classroom today.

Share this pencil case pic with you school bestie.

If you are out with me, I will absolutely point out where all the sweet shops used to be.

Prior to 1980, this corner of Sutton Coldfield was home to Coombes sweetshop. A much missed iconic shop in the town centre.

The shop is gone, but it lives on in everyone’s memories.

Two sweet nerds…

I popped into see my friend Lydia who runs , this shop is truly like stepping back in time. The jars, the nostalgia!

Where else would I be going on a Saturday? My favourite purchase was a bag of Cinnamon Balls as they are the closest thing I can find to Atomic Fireballs which I loved in my teens.

Freddo is adopted

Also he is Australia! Our favourite little green friend was born in Australia in 1930 into MacRobertson family.

In 1967 Cadbury bought MacRobertson. However, it wasn’t until 1973 that Freddo was sold in the UK for 2p.

He was then sadly cancelled until 1994 where here returned at 10p. Freddo continues to break the hearts of millennials who object to paying more than 10p for a chocolate frog.

One of these unlocked a core memory for you…

But which one?

Smarties have had more facelifts than some well known celebrities but have stayed loyal to their cocoa bean core. In fact they were at one time known as chocolate beans.

Bursting into our lives as full rainbow in 1937 to become the colourful treat we used to love on our lunch boxes.

The forgotten era…

Honestly, kids today miss out on so much.

Who remembers sending off their tokens to get really cool and fun novelties like these Smarties Cool Dude Shades?

I’ve never felt so cool in all my life. Were you ever this cool?

The wait is over…

The tickets for Birmingham Heritage week are on sale and I will be giving a talk on 17th September about Sweet Making in the West Midlands and remembering shops that were at the heart of the Four Oaks community.

Yes, Bertie will be coming with me, at this point he is basically my wing man.

Link for tickets are in my bio
