Busy day today around Gower - setting up a new apiary in the grounds of Stouthall Manor, checking out a new site in a 20-year old rewilded deciduous woodland, transferring nucs (mini ‘starter’ colonies) into full hives and adding honey boxes, known as ‘supers’, to our strongest colonies.

Happy winter solstice! From this day until late spring our queen bees increase their laying rate until eventually up to 2,000 eggs a day are being laid. There’s still some potentially tricky months to get through but as the days get longer from today we turn to spring preparations.
