Coleshill Organics was started on a farm at Watchfield in 1995. From an initial two acres we now have about thirty acres in total. The box scheme now operates from the walled garden in Coleshill. The business grew out of our passion to provide local people with the highest quality fresh produce - our enthusiasm and joy for truly flavoursome "real" food is reinforced every evening when we cook what

we have grown and taste the difference. We are extremely proud to have received the Award for 'Veg Box Scheme of the Year (2004)' from the Soil Association.

Squash and leeks finally made it out into the field, along with more successions of salad and kohl rabi. SO much w**ding to be done everywhere too so this is taking up rather a lot of our time at the moment. The last lot of brassicas are ready to go out soon so we’ll be planting them in the next week or so. Lots of lovely produce coming now, the cucumbers and peppers are really going for it and the first tomatoes will be ready soon too. Just need to remember to stay calm and keep our cool in the face of the next heat wave 🥴🌞

June has been (unsurprisingly) rather busy!

The tunnels went wild in the heat wave, with everything growing almost faster than we could keep up with. It did however bring some welcome treats of the first basil and cucumbers 🥒 🌱 the tomatoes are fruiting now too so it’s just a case of keeping on top of pruning and irrigation schedules as we wait for the first ones to ripen. The second lot of cucumbers are now in and the leek transplants are desperate to go out in the field but we’ve had to prioritise the outside beans and squash this week as they’re quite literally bursting out of their containers. The outdoor salads have overcome early issues with chafer grubs and are now thriving, the courgettes are flowering and the early tunnel carrots continue to deliver the sweet crunchy goods! 🥕they will soon hand the baton to the the first lot of field carrots, which are pretty much ready to go now so we’ll start lifting them in the next couple of weeks.

We’ve also been harvesting the first of the outdoor chard and doing the first w**d strikes on the second succession drilled a couple weeks back . Weeding generally continues in earnest all over the farm…! The recent rain has been very welcomed by the team but it obviously brings the w**ds with it, and we have plenty of them here 😬We’re keeping a sharp eye on the forecast for suitable weather windows, but also trying to accept that we can’t have everything when working so closely with nature. The rain is very much a gift in this changing climate of ours and with most heat waves forecast we must rejoice in it when it comes !

The early carrots are now ready to harvest and have made their way into some of the boxes this week, along with the first bulbs of fennel. They’ll be coming to this weekend too, along with the first cucumbers which have seem to have appeared out of nowhere during the heatwave 🥒 exciting times !

We’ve been trying to catch up on w**ding this week as the hot dry weather is perfect for killing the w**ds off. It’s really quite tough doing such physical work in these temperatures and the team have been absolute superstars to keep going throughout 💚 Thank you for all your hard work, you know who you are ! 🌞🤗

This week on the farm, celeriac and celery went out in the field, strawberries were w**ded and flowers removed to help them get established and we said goodbye to the last of the overwintered green manures in preparation for the next crop. The courgettes nearly made it out, but sadly we ran out of time so hoping to get those in on Monday. The leek transplants grown in the tunnels are nearly ready to go and we’re aiming to plant them in the next couple of weeks. Lots of stringing up in the tunnels, a long and fiddly job but all the cucumbers, beans and tomatoes are tied up now which is nice to have ticked off the list! Lots of w**ding too of course - this block pictured here is particularly bad for perennial w**ds and as it is home to the earliest planted crops there wasn’t the time (or weather) for any kind of exhaustive cultivation before planting. So we are just going to have to be a bit more on it with these beds to keep them all at bay 😅 to cheer us up the early carrots sown in February are nearly ready to harvest so we’ll be starting on these next week 🤗🥕

We’ve got some lovely new season veg coming to this weekend ! Bunched beetroot, sugar snap peas, spring onions, and bulb fennel, along with our delicious spring salad mix, head lettuces and all the other usual staples 🤗🥕🥬🥔

✨JOB OPPORTUNITY✨

We’re looking for a seasonal grower to join our small and friendly team this summer on our 7-acre farm in Coleshill, Oxfordshire. If you are hard-working, enthusiastic and enjoy working in a fast-paced outdoor environment, this could be the role for you.

The role will include:

➡️ propagation
➡️ planting
➡️ crop management (irrigation/w**ding/pruning etc)
➡️ harvesting
➡️ General farm jobs

What we’re looking for:

➡️ Passion for organic vegetable growing practices
➡️ Some experience working in commercial veg growing would be an advantage
➡️ Comfortable working outdoors in all weather
➡️ Reliable and motivated attitude
➡️ Able to work efficiently under pressure during busy periods
➡️ Supportive of team members and willing to pitch in wherever needed
➡️ Comfortable working independently if needed
➡️ Driving licence preferable but not essential

Pay: £13 p/h
Start date: ASAP
Hours: 2 days per week, ideally Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays but this can be flexible
Seasonal position until October 2026

Lots of planting this week as we get the next load of crops in the ground - summer and winter cabbage, kohl Rabi, PSB and Brussels sprouts went in the lower field, French beans in the tunnels, and more salads, beetroot, spring onions and fennel in some of the smaller field blocks.

Elsewhere the leeks have now finished and the overwintered green manure sown underneath them last autumn has taken over - the rye and vetch is now above waist height and looks so beautiful that we are reluctant to mow it next week to make way for the next crop!

The sugar snap peas are also almost ready to harvest, a true sign of spring 🤗🌞

It was time to w**d the early field carrots this week - a fiddly job but we caught it just in time when the w**ds were small enough to not outcompete the carrots but large enough to w**d out fairly quickly. This job does take patience and is hard on the body, so we’ll be trying stale seed beds before drilling the maincrop carrots to try and lessen the workload a bit. We have a very high w**d burden on this farm so often have to just learn to accept them as part of our organic system, however in certain cases such as this particular care must be taken to remove w**ds and ensure the success of the crop.

The first lot of aubergines and peppers have now been planted in the tunnels, along with the tomatoes. The next lot should hopefully go in next week. We’re having to relay crop the tomatoes with some of the last tunnel salads/radishes just until the first outdoor plantings are ready to pick. By the time the tomatoes need more space we will have cleared those intercrops and moved on to harvesting from the field.

Meanwhile the strawberries planted last week are doing well, the sugar snaps are flowering and the first lot of bulb fennel is well on its way. The farm is covered in apple blossom at the moment providing a very pretty backdrop while we work in the fields. We also said goodbye to the overwintered kale which had become a wild forest of yellow flowers on a backdrop of deep purple and green - sad to lose it but a great feeling to be putting all that organic matter back into the soil to feed subsequent crops.

A fond farewell to the overwintered kale which we finally mowed this week to make way for the next crop. We waited as long as possible while it was flowering to provide food for early pollinators but the time has now come ! Our assistant grower Kara took these rather special photos before mowing - a lovely last moment of appreciation for this crop which is both robust and beautiful all at once 💜💚💛
