Coleshill Organics was started on a farm at Watchfield in 1995. From an initial two acres we now have about thirty acres in total. The box scheme now operates from the walled garden in Coleshill. The business grew out of our passion to provide local people with the highest quality fresh produce - our enthusiasm and joy for truly flavoursome "real" food is reinforced every evening when we cook what

This has been an incredibly tough season for us, as it has for many growers and farmers around the country. We were so thankful to finally get some decent rain this week (18mm!) but it has been a long time coming and there have sadly been various crop failures due to the drought this summer. Flea beetle has been an absolute nightmare on brassicas (as I’m sure you are all aware!), as has spidermite in the tunnels which we still suffered despite applying preventative biocontrol. This winter we’ll be focussing on getting our tunnels heatwave-ready for next year as we were underprepared this year and next year is already being forecasted to be even hotter 🥵

It’s also been extremely difficult to get consistent germination on our undersown green manures as there has just simply not been enough time in the day to keep every block irrigated enough, and often we have had to prioritise cash crops. We’re now playing catch up with sowing green manures to get the ground covered for winter.

The team have worked so hard this year to keep everything ticking over, working in incredibly difficult conditions and often having to deal with stressful situations like crop failures and infrastructure/irrigation breakages. It has sometimes been a challenge to keep morale up but we are starting to feel slightly better now that rain has come, and we are all looking forward to things slowing down a bit over the next few months.

And all of this said, lots of crops have done fantastically despite the challenging conditions - so it’s not all bad!

We still have the rather daunting job of flipping the tunnels to winter crops (which have become verrrry overgrown this year due to not being able to work in the intense heat in there) but with a big team effort and a staggered approach I’m sure we will get there! The overwintering salads, herbs, chard and spinach are now being sown undercover so we should be starting the tunnel turnover in a couple of weeks.

A few snippets from the last couple of weeks on the farm! The team have been absolute troupers in the relentless heat, sowing, planting, w**ding, harvesting, pruning…and repeat! We’ve been busy getting the crops undersown with green manures to build soil fertility, protect soil structure and most importantly right now conserve soil moisture, but it has been a challenge to keep every block irrigated enough for good germination in this weather. Farming is a tough job at the best of times but a summer like this makes it incredibly challenging for both the crops and the growers.

Busy week getting the last of the winter brassicas in the ground, lots of w**ding, pruning, harvesting and never ending irrigation! We’ll be at tomorrow 8am-2pm with loads of exciting new things from our farm, including purple sprouting broccoli, aubergines, French beans, broad beans and TOMATOES!!🍅 🤗🍅 Hope to see you there!

First courgettes and kohl rabi coming to tomorrow, along with lots of cucumbers, spinach and chard which have gone full steam ahead in the heat wave. The team have done amazingly to catch up with w**ding this week despite the blistering temperatures and things are looking good around the farm, and we’ll be focussing on undersowing as many crops as possible with green manures. We still have the last lot of brassicas and courgettes to plant along with ongoing successions of salad/spring onions/radishes, but it feels like we are getting there now. It’ll be a relief to have the main bulk of planting done as the harvesting is now really starting to ramp up!

Squash and leeks finally made it out into the field, along with more successions of salad and kohl rabi. SO much w**ding to be done everywhere too so this is taking up rather a lot of our time at the moment. The last lot of brassicas are ready to go out soon so we’ll be planting them in the next week or so. Lots of lovely produce coming now, the cucumbers and peppers are really going for it and the first tomatoes will be ready soon too. Just need to remember to stay calm and keep our cool in the face of the next heat wave 🥴🌞

June has been (unsurprisingly) rather busy!

The tunnels went wild in the heat wave, with everything growing almost faster than we could keep up with. It did however bring some welcome treats of the first basil and cucumbers 🥒 🌱 the tomatoes are fruiting now too so it’s just a case of keeping on top of pruning and irrigation schedules as we wait for the first ones to ripen. The second lot of cucumbers are now in and the leek transplants are desperate to go out in the field but we’ve had to prioritise the outside beans and squash this week as they’re quite literally bursting out of their containers. The outdoor salads have overcome early issues with chafer grubs and are now thriving, the courgettes are flowering and the early tunnel carrots continue to deliver the sweet crunchy goods! 🥕they will soon hand the baton to the the first lot of field carrots, which are pretty much ready to go now so we’ll start lifting them in the next couple of weeks.

We’ve also been harvesting the first of the outdoor chard and doing the first w**d strikes on the second succession drilled a couple weeks back . Weeding generally continues in earnest all over the farm…! The recent rain has been very welcomed by the team but it obviously brings the w**ds with it, and we have plenty of them here 😬We’re keeping a sharp eye on the forecast for suitable weather windows, but also trying to accept that we can’t have everything when working so closely with nature. The rain is very much a gift in this changing climate of ours and with most heat waves forecast we must rejoice in it when it comes !

The early carrots are now ready to harvest and have made their way into some of the boxes this week, along with the first bulbs of fennel. They’ll be coming to this weekend too, along with the first cucumbers which have seem to have appeared out of nowhere during the heatwave 🥒 exciting times !

We’ve been trying to catch up on w**ding this week as the hot dry weather is perfect for killing the w**ds off. It’s really quite tough doing such physical work in these temperatures and the team have been absolute superstars to keep going throughout 💚 Thank you for all your hard work, you know who you are ! 🌞🤗

This week on the farm, celeriac and celery went out in the field, strawberries were w**ded and flowers removed to help them get established and we said goodbye to the last of the overwintered green manures in preparation for the next crop. The courgettes nearly made it out, but sadly we ran out of time so hoping to get those in on Monday. The leek transplants grown in the tunnels are nearly ready to go and we’re aiming to plant them in the next couple of weeks. Lots of stringing up in the tunnels, a long and fiddly job but all the cucumbers, beans and tomatoes are tied up now which is nice to have ticked off the list! Lots of w**ding too of course - this block pictured here is particularly bad for perennial w**ds and as it is home to the earliest planted crops there wasn’t the time (or weather) for any kind of exhaustive cultivation before planting. So we are just going to have to be a bit more on it with these beds to keep them all at bay 😅 to cheer us up the early carrots sown in February are nearly ready to harvest so we’ll be starting on these next week 🤗🥕

✨JOB OPPORTUNITY✨

We’re looking for a seasonal grower to join our small and friendly team this summer on our 7-acre farm in Coleshill, Oxfordshire. If you are hard-working, enthusiastic and enjoy working in a fast-paced outdoor environment, this could be the role for you.

The role will include:

➡️ propagation
➡️ planting
➡️ crop management (irrigation/w**ding/pruning etc)
➡️ harvesting
➡️ General farm jobs

What we’re looking for:

➡️ Passion for organic vegetable growing practices
➡️ Some experience working in commercial veg growing would be an advantage
➡️ Comfortable working outdoors in all weather
➡️ Reliable and motivated attitude
➡️ Able to work efficiently under pressure during busy periods
➡️ Supportive of team members and willing to pitch in wherever needed
➡️ Comfortable working independently if needed
➡️ Driving licence preferable but not essential

Pay: £13 p/h
Start date: ASAP
Hours: 2 days per week, ideally Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays but this can be flexible
Seasonal position until October 2026
