The HoneySmith

The HoneySmith 3rd generation Beekeeper. Company launched in 2019. All products are made with love by the bees. I am Dale Smith 3rd generation Beekeeper in Warwickshire.

In 1996 at the age of 8 I discovered my passion for beekeeping and have spent more years than I like to count perusing my hobby. In 2019 i started with my first hive with the sole hope to sell honey to local residents by the end of the year. For me the health and quality of life for the bees is my No.1 consideration. To this end I try to mimic there natural life cycles, with very little interferen

ce. Each of my hives is given more room than used for brood and only then is an extra box added to collect extra Honey! This means that the bees always have a stock of there own honey for lean times when other beekeepers would feed sugar water after taking every drop of honey they can. Any of the products that I harvest from my hives is only taken after careful consideration if the bees can spare it! My wax is only collected from old frames and burr comb. Propolis is scraped from frames and box's and never artificially induced. I'm passionate about local food and local crafts. I also apply these same values to all of the products that I produce.

Busy at work drawing out comb, amazing to see how yellow it is.

The bees have clearly found some Oilseed (OSR) making the wax much more of a vivid yellow.

Oilseed requires some timely management from the Beekeepers as it is prone to set quickly, Oilseed nectar contains a higher concentration of glucose. It makes ideal soft set or creamed honey.

It's still too cold to open the hive, it would risk chilling any brood developing. πŸ‘¨β€πŸΌ
This is the largest number of bees flying i have seen since November. 🐝

With the possibility of poor weather in the future, now is the time to offer supplemental feeding, to ensure food and brood continuity.

This is why we move bees at night, it is also why it's also terrifying to move them at night.

7 reasons to add honey to your cup of milk | The Times of India

Milk is a powerhouse of nutrition. And when we talk about honey, Ayurveda reveres it as both a medicine and a natural preservative, used extensively for internal and external therapeutic applications. But have you ever thought of combining these two to make a powerful concoction that has helped boos...

It’s that time of year when honey bee swarms start taking flight across the UK.
Swarming is the way honeybees reproduce, but many may not survive without your help.
Up to 80 per cent of swarms perish if they don’t find a suitable home – a statistic that underscores the urgency of public awareness and support.

Find your local swarm collector: https://www.bbka.org.uk/find-a-local-swarm-collector

The UK charity, the British Beekeepers Association (BBKA), has launched its annual Swarm Savers initiative with thousands of trained beekeepers across the country on standby to safely rescue and rehome honey bee swarms completely free of charge.

Festooning!!!

Festooning is a bee behaviour where worker bees link their legs together to form a chain-like structure between hive frames, often seen during comb building or repair.
This "living scaffolding" may help the bees in building comb or even in measuring distances between frames.
