Know the warning signs: what to look for inside a GRP water tank
Water tanks can develop defects gradually, so recognising the early warning signs can help site and facilities managers act before they lead to more serious problems.
During routine inspections, look out for:
π§ Blistering β raised areas on the internal surface, often caused by moisture penetrating the protective gelcoat.
π§ Cracking or damaged gelcoat β defects that can leave the surface more difficult to clean effectively.
π§ Deteriorating joints and seals β including visible movement, gaps or early signs of leakage.
π§ Corrosion β particularly around bolts, fittings and other metal components.
π§ Standing water or sediment β which may indicate that the tank is not draining or being maintained effectively.
π§ Contamination β including staining, debris or unexpected growth on internal surfaces.
Spotting these warning signs early gives you time to investigate and plan the appropriate maintenance or replacement before the issue becomes more disruptive and expensive.
