🧻 "Flushable" is not a standard. There is no test a wipe has to pass before the word goes on the packet.

What it means in practice is that the wipe will go round the bend. What happens after that is your problem - and if you are off mains, it is a problem that stops about ten metres from your back door.

Wipes do not break down. They knit together with fat and they sit there, and eventually somebody has to come and get them out.

Bin them. It is the single easiest thing on the Unblocktober list.

🍂 Is your wastewater system on the autumn list?

Gutters, boiler, log delivery, that fence panel. Most people have an autumn list. Almost nobody has a septic tank or treatment plant on it.

It's the wrong way round. Everything else on that list fails visibly. An off-mains system fails quietly, usually in the wettest month, usually at a weekend, and usually after months of warning signs nobody was looking for.

Three questions to ask yourself:

1. When was yours last serviced? If you can't answer that, it's been too long.

2. Is there something you've been putting up with? A smell, a slow drain, a patch of ground that never quite dries. Those aren't quirks.

3. Is it actually keeping up? A system sized for a family of four does not cope with a family of six, or a converted barn, or a Christmas holiday let.

Autumn is the right time to find out, while the ground is still workable.

The list is short and dull and it works:
No wipes, however flushable the packet claims to be.
No cooking fat, no oil, no grease down the sink.
Nothing but the three Ps.

If you are off mains, it matters more, not less. Your system has no one downstream to catch its mistakes.

📅 There are two ways to look after an off-mains system.

The first is to wait until something goes wrong, then find someone at short notice, on a weekend, in the rain.

The second is a service contract - planned visits, the same engineers each time, a record of the system's history, and a number to ring that already knows your address.

The second one is cheaper. It is also considerably less unpleasant.

Today is World Rivers Day, and these four are ours. Most of the country could not name them. Most people who live here could not name all four either.

If you are on mains drainage, it leaves your property and becomes somebody else's problem. If you are off-mains - and a good many rural properties in the Southwest are - it goes about ten metres and stops. Everything else follows from it:

Emptying: You must book regular tanker collections to empty septic tanks or sewage treatment plants.

Servicing: Mechanical parts in treatment plants need annual checks by certified engineers.

Rules: Discharges must follow General Binding Rules set by the Environment Agency.

Sales: Property sales require clear maintenance records, compliance checks, and a survey of the system.
