🇫🇮 Elina and Taneli Pajunen (Mikkeli, Finland) have a mixed herd of roughly 50% Red Dairy Cattle (RDC) and 50% Holstein cows, milked by two robots with an average yield 11,300 kg ECM (10,000 kg milk, 4.4% fat and 3.7% protein). They value the herd's uniformity and ease of management and are determined to retain the RDC cows because of their excellent health.

In the first lactation, an RDC heifer may not match the production of a Holstein heifer. However, they do not judge cows based on their first lactation. In their view, a cow's true potential becomes apparent from the second lactation onwards.

They also find that medium-sized VikingRed cows perform exceptionally well in a mixed herd, as they summarize it perfectly: “RDC should not be too small, but this doesn’t mean that RDC should automatically be larger: in mixed herds the size of Holstein cows should also be kept under control!”

Increased profits thanks to top-quality milk with the highest solids levels and healthy, feed-efficient cows - these are some of the reasons why Inge and Thomas Frey switched to VikingJersey.

The VikingJersey cows are an ideal solution for the Frey family’s farm. They allow them to maintain high production while making the most of the stalls in their stables built in the mid-1980s.

"Jersey cows are better suited for our barns because they are smaller. We have converted the low stalls to high stalls with mats, making cleaning the stalls much easier and saving on labour,"

Four Finnish dairy farms with mixed Red Dairy Cattle (RDC) and Holstein herds share a common experience: the first lactation does not necessarily reveal the full potential of a VikingRed cow.

While production in the first lactation may be more modest, the farmers see strong performance from the second lactation onwards, together with qualities such as health, resilience, efficient forage use and longevity.

🐄 Generations, teamwork, and progressive breeding at Ylöskartano in Finland

At Ylöskartano Oy in Hämeenlinna, dairy farming is built on long-term thinking, close collaboration, and a willingness to evolve. From a small herd in the 1960s to today’s operation with 140 cows, the farm’s development reflects decades of commitment across generations.

Today, Otto and Janne Näsi run the farm together, combining experience with fresh ideas. The herd consists of 76% Holstein, 20% VikingRed, and ProCROSS crossbreeds, with breeding focused on conformation, udders, milking speed, teat placement, and strong milk components. All calves are genomically tested, supporting well-informed breeding decisions.

Milking is handled by two robots, with a third currently being added and plans for further expansion. The efficient setup supports a strong production level of 12,262 kg milk per cow, with 4.45% fat and 3.73% protein.

Years of structured breeding have produced impressive results, including 11 cows exceeding 100,000 kg lifetime milk yield and three bulls sold to VikingGenetics. At the same time, Ylöskartano looks ahead, actively testing ProCROSS crossbreeding to introduce heterosis effects such as improved fertility.

With deep roots in history and eyes firmly set on the future, Ylöskartano shows how teamwork, technology, and balanced breeding can drive sustainable dairy production forward 🥛🧬

🐮🧬 Meet 1122 Emmy, a fantastic VR Vimo daughter from Johan Hansson’s herd at Kyrkoryk, Sweden.

Born in 2020, 1122 Emmy is still going strong and has had four calves. Her average production over 4.2 lactations is impressive: 13,348 kg of ECM, with 6.0% fat and 4.4% protein — equivalent to a total of 1,050 kg of fat and protein.

She is classified with 87 points in total, including an outstanding 92 points for udder. A beautiful combination of production, components and conformation.

1122 Emmy is also the dam of VR Ulvar. Born in 2022 at Johan Hansson’s farm, VR Ulvar has been a very popular bull, widely used in Sweden, Finland and Denmark, as well as in 21 other countries, particularly popular in the USA, Croatia, France, Mexico and Argentina.

In the August 2026 proof run, VR Ulvar received his official proof based on daughters and reached an impressive NTM +36. VR Ulvar has several high-ranking sons, among them the highest-ranking heterozygous polled bull VR Unico P (VR Ulvar x VR Vilho P) at gNTM +38.
