This field was terribly overgrown and rushes had completely taken over. A long way to go, but slowly getting there 🚜. There’s a little bit of fencing to do, then we can get the cows and sheep down here grazing again

We’ve had lots of great questions as to why the Herdwick lambs are black and if they are crosses or pure bred. So I thought I’d do a little post of the colour transition.

Most Herdwick lambs are born black. I assume it goes back to disguise and camouflage against predators. Sometimes they have 2 white dots on the back of their ears (seen in picture 2). I have heard this is to represent eyes to put off attackers. (I’m not sure how true that is, but it could be?)

After a few months, the eyes and mouth start to turn white, they often end up with the little balaclavas. Usually by the end of the year, the entire head and legs will be white. The wooly coat remains black (it can go brown due to bleaching by the sun). After the first shear, the wool is usually a lovely dark grey colour that tends to get lighter over the years.

We have some very exciting news to share with you. Myrtle was scanned not in calf back in March. However we have been watching her closely and noticed some unusual growth. She has now been confirmed IN-CALF! We are so excited. A little white park calf due in July 🐮

🐮It’s been a cow day today. Titus our White park bull has been let outside for the first time since December. He’s absolutely loved it. Had a good run around and a much needed brush. Just need a bit of rain to wash him off 🤣

We moved the two girls in a field further away to avoid any escapees. So far so good!
