Once a day Roo leads the way in for milking time.
She’s built up a nice little bond with her adopted ‘milk mama’ Wisp since being out with our herd of crosses.

She won’t feed from any of the cows as a bottle or a bucket has been her way of getting milk for so long now but she knows these ladies mean safety and family.

Our beautiful little adopted red pointed white Riggit Galloway, Roo is now a fully fledged member of our mini spring calving herd of crosses.
This bunch of ladies are amazingly kind, gentle and really look after each other’s calves so we knew they’d take Roo on no problem.

She’s been playing with her new gang of calf best mates and we’ve spotted a couple of the cows giving her evening baths too.

She’s still getting bucket fed by us humans twice a day using Jersey Wisp’s milk which she’s enjoying enormously compared to the powdered variety!

I think it’s now safe to say that this little lady is 100% a success story ❤️❤️

It’s so difficult to know who is my favourite out of our two Galloway bulls… both have such different personalities.

With Neptune here, you have to try harder to get close to him. He doesn’t seek out attention as easily as Arnie does and is often scared of his own shadow 😂

BUT when he does decide to come for a scratch, it makes us feel like we’ve won the lottery 💙

Both bulls should be respected for their sheer size and strength but deep down they are both buttheaded cuddle monsters.

Evening cow checks are always a family favourite.
Time spent ambling amongst the cattle, chatting about plans for our little farm, who’s the favourite cow of the moment, endless bug hunting, plant spotting and bird watching.

We are really enjoying watching the progress our young heifers are making of our wetland area that we plan to turn into a water meadow of sorts.
Their job here is to graze away at the wide range of leaves from the densely overhanging trees and the surrounding rough plants.
As they graze and browse, they are pushing their way into brambles and willow and hazel thickets, creating paths and opening up areas to light which encourages the new growth of plants that would otherwise struggle to establish themselves.
Their feet tread down bracken and reeds stopping their spread and again this encourages areas of new plant life.

Their poo attracts insect life which in turn attracts a whole host of species from bats to birds and even the frogs, toads and newts we’ve spotted will benefit from them being there.

So proud of this girl gang for really cracking on with this job for us and being so content with their new surroundings at the same time 💚🌿

After a good old nap and a graze, the boy was fully revived and ready for night 3 with his women.

As much as I miss our old bull Ferdinand, Arnie is the provider of many LOLs and is the biggest softie ever ❤️

Time to make some more spring Belties for us running with our own homebred heifers this time.

With 4 calves on the ground already, his next batch are due from the end of July 🥳

Sherbet making the most out of the cool, damp Devon ground for her snooze in the shade.
It’s been hot down here but thank goodness it’s not made the highs that we would have had in Hampshire this week!

A massive thunderstorm overnight cleared the air bringing us back down to highs of 22 today 🙌

The girls were back out grazing in their very own humid Devon ‘rainforest’ this morning and looking very content 💚🌿

Even cows enjoy a paddle on a hot day….
These beauties loving the slate bottomed stream 💚

Our little group of 10 heifers took a trip onto a different sort of pasture this weekend.
We are lucky enough to have a stream running through the bottom of our farm with very rough grazing adjoining this. This grazing has been left wild for a long time allowing brambles and reeds to get a little out of control.
The plan is to graze this off and use the cows to turn it back into a water meadow where both wildlife and plant life can thrive once more.

We’ve used the Belties on conservation grazing before and what they achieved on a butterfly meadow back in Hampshire was amazing.

We can’t wait to see what this gang do to this patch!

🌿Hatherland Rowan🌿

Also affectionately known to us as Roo ❤️

She was a bit of an unexpected addition to our Brightstone gang but a very welcome one!

Roo had a bit of a sad start to life after being rejected by her mother. She was born as one of a twin pair of Riggit heifers to our lovely friend’s cow who bred our Riggit bull Neptune.
Her mother happily cared for her twin sister but sadly, despite her breeder’s best efforts, she wouldn’t take to Roo 🥺

We got a message asking if we’d like to take her on as a bottle fed calf with no promises that she’d make it but she was ours if we were happy to try.
Needless to say myself and Willow went to see her the very next day.
When we saw that little face it was love at first sight and we brought her home.
Having never been on a bottle before, we were skeptical of her taking to it easily but Roo has been a little fighter since her very first day and she hooked on straight away 🥳

Fast forward almost 2 months now and Roo is a very bouncy and hilariously sweet little heifer!

Despite her sad start, we count ourselves so lucky to have been given the chance to rear her and for her to eventually join our growing herd of Riggits.
