⭐ We have a barn!!! ⭐

Built by the husband and a couple of work mates and in 8 days too!
So proud of all the effort he’s put into this project for us all the endless digging and levelling of the groundwork, laying drainage, collecting and placing tons of locally sourced slate to the floor, getting the framework up, roofing and guttering on, the wood cladding and concrete panels and then laying the beautiful concrete floor!
I’m sure I’ve missed key construction points off the list but hey ho! It’s been a task and a half and he’s smashed it 🙌

Next up is the fun bit… decking out the inside with feed barriers, water troughs, calving gate, actual swinging gates that shut on a latch 😅 and a cow brush or two!

The latest addition to the herd, born yesterday to the cutie that is Shelsleys Gazania 💜

Welcome ☘️Brightstone Ginkgo☘️

This is our 8th calf from Arnie.
His 5th heifer.
His 4th dun addition to the herd.

They are coming out so strong and all with his lovely head shape too.

Less than 24 hours old and I already caught her bouncy about in the gorse patches away from mum Beetle!
She’s been aptly named so it seems 🥰

It never gets old how independent and raring to go these Beltie calves are compared to the bigger commercial breeds.

The one we wait for every year ….

🪲 Beetle 🪲

Our first ever Beltie heifer. The first is always a special one.
She arrived with us at weaning and then the rest of her family came a few months later following a herd dispersal.

Every year from her first time running with a bull she has given us a heifer calf.
7 heifer calves in a row - one in her first calving year to an Angus bull. Then we bought our first Beltie bull Ferdinand and she had Willow, Butterfly, Clover, Dragonfly, Elderflower and Fallow.

This year was her first year running with Millbrook Arnie and we were thinking, ‘new bull - it will be a bull calf!’

But no, another beautiful little heifer to continue her line!
We are over the moon with this and the fact she is a black Beltie too!

Massive thanks to Arnie for not breaking her heifer winning streak 🤣❤️

So nice to be seeing calves coming through from our first bull Ferdinand’s daughters…
This is what we set out to do, breed from our own homebred cows ❤️

Ferdinand didn’t leave us with many heifers during his time with us. Although I am grateful for that because it meant we got to keep that lovable lump for longer 🤣

Here we’ve got beautiful Bumpy with her little heifer calf Gadget.

Bumpy, Clover and Willow are our first homebreds to have carried on his line.
Next to meet with Arnie in the new year are Dragonfly, Elderflower, Egret and Echo. As well as Ferdinand’s half ‘nieces’ River and Risso.
The following year it will be Fern, Firefly and Fallow’s turn.

What a lucky lad he is to have this bevvy of beauties coming through for him 🥰

Our two bestest girls…

Bestest because they are the remaining two from the original mini herd we bought 10 years ago.

Howe Mill Peaceful affectionately known to us all as ‘Old Girl’ has just turned 17.
Huttons Catriona aka Beetle now 10 years old.

We got these girls alongside another cow and heifer. Both now sadly passed away from injuries on separate occasions a few years back.
Thankfully we have their daughters to our old bull Ferdinand in the herd as living reminders of these gentle girls.
We got so lucky with this bunch as our first taste of Beltie ownership….they and their offspring have been kind and even tempered.
They have helped to form the foundation of the Brightstone Gang and with Arnie now at the helm for breeding we are so pleased with how our homebred cattle are turning out.

Our first ever dun Beltie heifer - Fraggle is 8 months old now.

She is the absolute double of her dad Arnie.
Same deep dun colouring, same crazy mop of curls and a pretty calm temperament…. Just need to halter the wee beast now!

I always wanted a dun heifer and I’m pretty pleased that this girl is our first 🤎🤍🤎

Waking up, breathing a little easier this morning after our first herd TB test in Devon was clear yesterday 🥳

Moving to a high risk area has been a bit of a worry but us humans and cows all seem happier down here that’s for sure.

We can breathe for another 6 months until the next one comes around and remain vigilant when it comes to deer and badger proofing our environment as best we can - easier said then done at times 🥴

How lucky are we with views like this on our cow checks?!

This years Riggit calves are 6 months old now and looking amazing fed on nothing but their mother’s milk and the lovely Devon grass 💚

Despite being Galloways too, they have such a different frame to the Belties. Much more muscular but still with that gorgeous double haired coat.
