It’s Father’s Day this weekend and we’ve had a couple of customers see our sign and remember they hadn’t sorted anything yet. Hawkstone Gift Sets have been popular.

We sell a lot of Pol Roger in standard and magnum bottles and now have the beautifully boxed Jeroboam (containing a generous 3 litres - the equivalent of four standard bottles) in the shop. We also have a dummy Balthasar. These hold an enormous 12 litres and make our oft commented upon the dummy Methuselah we use as a doorstop (which holds 6 litres) look positively dainty. If you need a Methuselah or Balthazar of Pol Roger, we can order it in for you.

Today a couple came in wanting a white wine that was a bit different to the usual Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc. This white Rioja immediately sprang to mind as the Tempranillo Blanco grape it is made from is a new grape variety mutated from the red Tempranillo grape. It was discovered in 1988 but was only planted and used under the Rioja DOC label in 2007. I said another recommendation would have been a bottle of Cotswold Hills made from grapes grown at the Royal Agricultural College but it was still in the van being brought over. Just then, our delivery driver pulled up. Of course he wasn’t permitted to pause and was instructed to immediately grab a case. Happy days and because they couldn’t choose, the customers decided they take both.
