Building natural capital for a better future. Collaborating with businesses to get a better connection to nature 🌳 🦉🐝🦋

Last week, we completed planting a 30-acre field with over 1000 heritage fruit trees from .

The motivation for this stem back to 2019 when we felt into a new way of farming. One where we put nature restoration & connection at the heart of our farming strategy, along with producing food.

We also felt into the climate and biodiversity crisis, so, we wanted to help sequester carbon by the planting of fruit trees and also with the aim of improving the infield biodiversity. With climate change has come more extreme weather events. So the trees' principal function is to provide shade and shelter for livestock. The trees will provide a second crop of food in the field as well as beef and lamb. As we have bees on the farm the fruit trees will provide an abundance of nectar which will be turned into 🍯.

We made a conscious decision to plant heritage fruit trees so we could show case the great variety of fruit that is available in the UK.

Some of the varieties we are growing are;

🍎

Lopemede Farm Community Path

On Sunday 14 December, Cllr Andy Gilbert, Mayor of Thame was invited to cut the ribbon and officially open the Lopemede Farm community path. This permissive footpath, which runs through the working farm and newly planted woodland, links up with an existing public footpath.

A group of local residents joined Andy and farmer Eddie Rixon to walk from St Mary’s church, Thame to the farm which is located off the Thame Road on the road to Long Crendon.The farmland extends down to the River Thame and this multi-generation farming business is run on regenerative farming principles, whereby they are restoring the natural capital of the land, planting trees, new hedges, creating new ponds and restoring ghost ponds that were filled in during the 1950s. They have restored the wetland habitat of our river fields, by creating scrapes for red-list bird species like lapwings and curlews and have created scrub and restored historic wildflower meadows.

We aren't far off completing a permissible footpath that will take you right to the top of the farm along a mile route.

This is so we can strengthen our connection with our community and offer people a sustainable way to access the farm.

This is also a great way to visit the businesses on the farm Sonder Experience, Fallow and Fields Kitchen ,
All The World's A Stage, Renboga & By Firelight

We also see the footpath as a perfect route to connect people to nature as you travel through the fields.

We have created 7 fenced-off footpath sections through our fields; the first three follow the existing public footpath off the Old Thame Road. The final three will take you through woodland parcels, which will be planted in December.

We welcome people to walk their dogs as long as they are on leads.

We hope to have the footpath ready before the end of the month and will be communicating the access route as soon as it is ready.

A BIG thank you to Peter Fleming Photography for the footage and to Jeremy Hitchcox for doing all of the fencing.
