West Berkshire Roastery

West Berkshire Roastery Home of Berkshire Coffee - for those who care what’s in their cup Small batch speciality coffee roasters.

Nestled near the local lakes and nature reserve in Thatcham, one of the oldest continually inhabited settlements in England - our Award Winning coffee is small batch hand-roasted to order, this ensures it loses none of its original flavour and maintains a richer fuller taste for longer. Every single coffee bean reflects our commitment to a sustainable business and our direct trade partnerships wit

h our farmers. We only use speciality grade beans, which have cleaner more distinctive flavours than cheaper commercial coffees, and are traceable to the skilled farmers and their farms across the world. These beans are carefully roasted to produce select flavours to suit a wide range of styles and tastes.

🎉 2,000 Followers... Wow! Thank You! 🎉

Looking back through these photos, it's incredible to see how far we've come.

Our story began in 2014 as Runner Bean Coffee Co., with Alex serving businesses across West Berkshire from a coffee van. Behind the scenes, coffee was being roasted in a garden shed on a humble 1kg roaster, while Barley, our first CEO dog, took quality control very seriously and supervised events with great enthusiasm.

When COVID changed the world and many businesses closed their doors, we took the opportunity to make a big change ourselves. Runner Bean moved from van to unit, and we began building what would become West Berkshire Roastery.

The unit wasn't exactly glamorous when we arrived. It was mostly empty, featuring little more than a mouldy old sofa. But it was a blank canvas, and we were excited to see what it could become.

Towards the end of 2020, West Berkshire Roastery was born, starting with a single 5kg roaster and so our vision grew. Since then, we've seen countless changes - from rearranging rooms and redesigning packaging to expanding our team and increasing production. We've even had a change in management along the way. When Barley retired as CEO, Bertie stepped into the role and has been keeping the team in line ever since.

We've also been lucky to grow our team along the way. We were delighted to welcome Millie in 2024, followed by Ella in 2025. And we're excited to share that another team member, Liam, will be joining us hopefully in August 2026... 👀 Watch this space!

But, none of this would have been possible without you!

To every customer who has bought a bag of coffee, visited the roastery, shared a post, recommended us to a friend, or simply followed our journey - thank you. We love seeing your coffee setups, hearing your feedback, and receiving the photos you share with us.

Reaching 2,000 followers is a milestone we're incredibly grateful for, but it's the community behind that number that means the most.

It's been an amazing journey so far, and we're only just getting started. We've got plenty of exciting plans for the future, and we're so glad to have all of you along for the ride.

❤️ Thank you for supporting local coffee.

You can take the coffee person out of the roastery…

But you can’t take the coffee obsession out of the coffee person.

Throwback to roasting coffee back in 2014 for our coffee van - with a small 1kg machine, a lot of trial and error, and a genuine love for coffee.

Experimenting with different beans and roast profiles quickly became an obsession with flavour, quality, and learning the craft properly. There were plenty of mistakes along the way, and even our first Great Taste award.

Over 10 years later, the passion is still the same. Keep improving, keep roasting, and keep making coffee we’re proud to serve 😊

Some snaps from our trip to London for the Coffee Festival on Thursday ☕️

It was such a cool (and very nerdy) experience, but also super interesting to see vendors from tea, cake, açai, matcha and chai companies too. Safe to say, there were a lot of free samples… yum. We even spotted a latte art robot 🤖☕️

It was also great catching up with some of our contacts in the Roasters Village, including friends from Brazil and Colombia, as well as other coffee roasteries we already knew.

Thank you as well for your patience with coffee orders while we’ve been catching up after such a busy few days - we really appreciate it 🤎

Don't forget, we are closed for walk ins today but you can still buy your coffee online ☕️

We’re so excited to have our tickets for the Coffee Festival at The Truman Brewery in London this Thursday! ☕🎉

It’s such an amazing opportunity for us - and honestly, the one day of the year where we get to step outside the four walls of the roastery and fully immerse ourselves in the wider coffee world. And it’s BIG… with vendors and producers from Africa to South America and Asia, it really is a thriving celebration of coffee culture from across the globe.

We’ll be exploring what’s new and up-and-coming in the industry, catching up with some of our brilliant collaborators, making new connections, and coming back inspired with fresh ideas to make West Berkshire Roastery even better and more exciting for you guys.

We can’t wait! 🙌 Stay connected - we’ll be posting throughout the day 📸

Note: The roastery will be closed on Thursday 14th May for walk ins but you can still order your coffee online 🤩
