Is This Art? This is the first of 10 pieces I'll be creating for an art exhibition I've been invited to display at in August.
I've never considered myself an artist... I make functional baskets, stuff that works... Beauty in the form is always something I aim for too, but whilst working, I'm generally thinking about how the item will be used, not how it will look in a gallery....
Art is a very subjective matter though I suppose, so I've accepted the invitation from and have started creating the body of work. Every piece will be made using purely buff noir willow from to set it apart from my usual creations.

This is where all the magic happens, my home away from home. Over the past 3 years basketry and teaching has become such a massive part of my life.
I built this structure especially for teaching under, it's gone through several stages of development, and it's still not finished.
I'm currently shopping around for some canvas walls with windows so that I can shelter my students from bad weather, without losing the beautiful light and airy nature.

A Traditional Irish Skib. Used to serve potatoes at communal feasts, these large trays were often hung on walls decoratively when not in use.

Time To Face The Facts. Growing veg, although it's been my profession for many years, is no longer a viable or sensible way for me to earn a living.
Market gardening is incredibly rewarding, but it's also immensely grawling work. Bent over backwards for the majority of the day, just to sell the produce for very little money, if it sells at all.
It's a sorry state of affairs, but I earn a higher income posting these video's on social media, than I ever did selling veggies at market.
It's fair to say, I am now a basket maker, full time willow weaver. Playing with sticks is my new profession, and it's much more comfortable work, both physically and financially.
When I started, I thought it was going to be a cute little side hustle to see me through the winter, but it's very much a full time endeavour. 3 months of harvesting and grading, leading into the rest of the year; comprising or crafting, teaching, and selling.

Stripping Willow; Using a brake to remove the bark from homegrown willow.
Once harvested, the willow is stood upright in water for around 4 months. The sap starts to rise, roots and leaves begin to form. It is now ready to be processed.
At this stage, the willow is passed through the brake and the compression between the two steel rods separates the bark from the wood. The bark is then removed by hand, or sometimes you get lucky and the brake does all the work for you.
Stripped willow, aka white willow, offers a different aesthetic to natural bark. The soaking times are also heavily reduced down to a few hours, rather than several days.
