Willow Coppice

We have a willow plantation next to Cam Brook that was planted around 20 years ago and it now quite overgrown. This winter we’ve coppiced a section with the aim to coppice it in a rotation of 5 years. We’ll chip as much as we can to use as compost. But now it’s mainly a lot of firewood!

The hungry gap is about here but we still have some fresh veg going! Hungry Gap kale, purple sprouting broccoli, and Kalettes are still coming out of the field and making appearances in the veg boxes and shop. And we’re starting to pick more salad and spinach from the tunnels.

Next we will be harvesting the tops off of the Brussels sprout plants. It’s a secret grower delight that we’ll be sharing in our veg boxes. It’s delicious and easy to cook and cutting the top helps the sprouts plump up in time for the holidays!

We’ve harvested the squash a few weeks back and have it all cured and in storage. We had to get a bit creative about where we put it since we have so much! We have most in climate controlled storage but we had to use our propagation benches as backup storage.

We still have the Red Kuri and Green Hokkaido squash which don’t store long term. Then we have Crown Prince, Black Futsu, and Marina di Chioggia that should last until spring and keep and our veg boxes stocked.
