Blackcurrant harvest is in full swing. Frosts during flowering and a prolonged drought have not helped our blackcurrant bushes as they fight to hold onto their crop. Quantity is down, but quality is most certainly up with sugars at an all time high thanks to the sunshine. Some much needed rain would certainly go a long way.

A drainage problem that became apparent when we were planting blackcurrants in the Winter has now been repaired and vastly improved thanks to G & S Brown. We have been using Browns for nearly 50 years, and as all their work is buried underground, trust is without question. Thank you Graham.

This newspaper cutting from over 170 years ago clearly shows that even back then farms were dangerous places….Ouch !

Hand w**ding our young blackcurrants we planted in February. A screwdriver is the tool of choice, it loosens the moist ground under the polythene as we stab it through and we can remove the w**d easily, roots and all. Three of us managed to cover 6 hectares in a day and a half.
This year seems to be the year of the aphid. The picture shows what damage they do, specifically inhibiting growth. Luckily we have now treated them, and hopefully the plants will soon recover and power away.

Mulching the orchards with straw helps keep the moisture in the ground when it does finally decide to rain. Next to no April showers really helped pollination, but a good rain now will certainly push on our young fruitlets.
