The recent rain has really helped our cuttings as well as our one year olds. With the grass sown and growing well it really is starting to look like a plantation.

Hand w**ding our young blackcurrants we planted in February. A screwdriver is the tool of choice, it loosens the moist ground under the polythene as we stab it through and we can remove the w**d easily, roots and all. Three of us managed to cover 6 hectares in a day and a half.
This year seems to be the year of the aphid. The picture shows what damage they do, specifically inhibiting growth. Luckily we have now treated them, and hopefully the plants will soon recover and power away.

Mulching the orchards with straw helps keep the moisture in the ground when it does finally decide to rain. Next to no April showers really helped pollination, but a good rain now will certainly push on our young fruitlets.

With the blackcurrants coming into full flower, we have a little time to level out the ruts we made in the Spring after the extremely wet Winter we had.

Applying some compost today on our new Magic Star orchard. The compost will help preserve moisture for our young trees where they need it. A drop of rain would be rather nice now too.

Getting close to the end of our winter work on the blackcurrants. It has certainly not been easy as the weather has been against us for the last month, but a couple of dry days this week has helped get machines on the land and we can start to see the light at the end of the tunnel. A massive thank you to our team who have worked so hard these last weeks to get the jobs done.

Despite one of the wettest winters on record, we have had a busy few weeks before and after Christmas planting a new orchard and a few more blackcurrants. Everything feels better when the sun shines, but I fear it won’t last long again! 🌦️

With our apple picking well and truly over, it’s a massive thank you to our harvesting team who had the huge task of bringing in one of the largest crops of apples we have ever grown.
We now have a busy week sub soiling and spraying the orchards as we look after next year’s fruit bud, herbicide spraying where we are planting blackcurrants next year, and trying to finish off some blackcurrant pruning. All before next week’s rain!
