Legend has it that along the rugged coast of Cornwall, smugglers bringing rum ashore kept a clever trick up their sleeves. When the tax men appeared on the horizon, they’d toss their barrels of rum into the sea rather than get caught.

The sealed barrels floated safely offshore until the danger passed. But when they were hauled back out of the water, the rum sometimes had a slight salty edge from the sea.

The solution? Citrus, sugar, and a little ingenuity.

By blending the rum with fresh fruit and sweetness, locals created a delicious drink known as shrub, turning a problem into a tradition that’s still enjoyed today.

From smuggler’s secret to Cornish classic.

Shrub was a very popular drink that went away when Lovage was stopped being produced, but….. we’ve brought it back as well! We are currently only making small batches of it so please get in touch or head over to The Tipple Cellar to pick yourself up a bottle (or 6!)

Thank you so much to everyone who made it down to the unit yesterday, and for all the support we have received as a business.

This is a side business for the three of us, as we all have our own careers and have started families of our own, so it is truly amazing to see our customer base grow over the past few years and just as lovely to see so many of you returning!

We’ve received a few messages about purchasing bottles of lovage and shrub. While we had intended to close now for our Christmas break, we’ve decided to remain available until Monday 22nd December. We will then be closed until Monday 2nd February.

We have limited stock available, but we’re happy to arrange collection upon request. Please just send us a message on Facebook or drop us an email.

A Rum and Shrub is just a fantastic drink in itself, but the same with Lovage that a lot of people aren’t sure how they would like to drink it.

We made another set of cocktail ideas that include our new Shrub Cordial and hope you enjoy it as much as we hope you will!

We’ve been getting lots of people asking what’s best to try Lovage with. Traditionally it’s always been a Brandy and Lovage, but recently we’ve been hearing it’s really nice with Dark Rum.

We thought we would put some cocktails together for you all to try this Christmas Season!

As many of you know, we run this little business part-time alongside our full-time jobs and our ever-expanding families, which means we aren’t always down at the unit in Discovery Court. We’re also pleased to let you know that we’ll be open on Sunday 14th December from 12pm to 3pm. So please pop down, say hello, and pick up a bottle of Lovage or Shrub while stocks last!

A huge thank you to everyone who came to say hello and buy something at the street market today. It was lovely to see so many returning customers, and we were absolutely blown away by how many new ones we welcomed!
