Hello June… and Happy World Milk Day!

Today we’re celebrating the rich, creamy milk of our own Jersey herd. Known for its exceptional quality and flavour, Jersey is the milk at the heart of our 100% cows’ milk Brie, Elmhirst, Camembert and the Rustics… and our mixed milk Rushmore and Savour.

🐄 Naturally richer: Jersey milk contains higher levels of butterfat, typically 4.8% to 5.5%, compared to the average 3.5% found in many other milks. This gives it a rich, creamy texture and exceptional flavour.

🧀 Better for cheesemaking: The higher protein content of Jersey milk, averaging around 3.8%, helps create excellent cheese and contributes to the distinctive character and texture of Sharpham cheeses.

🌼 Golden colour: Jersey milk has a naturally more golden colour thanks to its higher beta-carotene content, a pigment found in fresh grass and forage.

It’s always a pleasure to step out of our corner of Devon and catch up with fellow cheesemakers from across the country.

Last week, Greg and Nicky made the trip to Melton Mowbray for the Artisan Cheese Awards 2026, where ELMHIRST was in the running for a top award.

We’re delighted to share that our decadent triple cream cheese was named one of the final three in the Soft Cheese category. While we didn’t take home the top prize this time, we’re incredibly proud to be recognised among the top three soft cheeses in the UK.

The Artisan Cheese Awards champion artisan cheesemakers across the UK and Ireland, and this year attracted a record-breaking 644 entries from more than 100 cheesemakers.

And yes… Devon to Melton Mowbray is a very long drive! 🚙💨

👉🏼 Elmhirst Tasting Notes: Named after the owners of the Dartington Estate with family ties to the original Sharpham cheesemaker, Maurice Ash, Elmhirst is pure dairy opulence. Similar to a Vignotte, double cream is added to our Jersey milk, resulting in mould-ripened triple cream cheese that is rich and mousse-like when young (2-3 weeks old) and develops into a full-bodied, decadent, and gooey experience when mature (4-6 weeks).

🐐 When we say goat’s cheese on salad it’s got to be Ticklemore.

Mildly lemony, a little bit earthy, fresh and zingy… we were bowled over by just how good Ticklemore pairs with smoked salmon and avocado!

We added melon, tomato and cucumber, a sprinkling of toasted seeds, a twist of black pepper, a tiny drizzle of olive oil and a squeeze of lime juice.

The result was a bowl that was fresh, bright and seriously full of flavour.

No recipe… just a fridge raid salad bowl with added Ticklemore. It’s the ideal cheese to add to any sunny lunch outdoors!

👀 It might look too tired for the cheeseboard… but trust us, if that wedge or wheel is Sharpham then it’s still packed with flavour.

🪴Toby’s Garden Festival is a highlight of our show calendar and it’s coming up this Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd May in the beautiful grounds of Powderham Castle.

☀️ Just like the Boat Race, the Grand National and the London Marathon, it heralds summer on in its way!

🤞Rain or shine (we’ve had both over the years!), it’s a fabulous two days full of all things gardening, food and drink, fascinating talks, and a chance to meet the makers.

🧀 We’ll be in our usual spot in the Castle Courtyard with lots of fellow artisan food and drink producers. Foodie talks are inside the Castle this year, so make sure you don’t miss Greg sharing his cheesy knowledge (and lots of cheese tasters) on Friday at 11.30am.
