People often ask us what makes Balmaud different, and for us, it always comes back to the land.

Long before there was a distillery, there was a family farm. Building Balmaud wasn't about changing what our family did, it was about building on everything that came before.

What makes it rare is that nothing in this process gets outsourced or brought in from elsewhere. It all happens here, on one estate, under one family's care.

That's what single estate means to us. It isn't a detail on a label, it's where our story actually begins, and that kind of provenance can't be created overnight.

Knowing where to make the cut is an important part of distillation.

As the spirit comes off the still, it changes throughout the run. The early spirit, often referred to as the "foreshots" or "heads" is separated, followed by the" heart", the part we want to carry forward. As the character changes again, the later spirit, or feints, is separated too.

There’s a technical side to deciding where those cuts are made, but numbers only tell part of the story.

A distiller’s senses and experience at the still also play an important role. Understanding the spirit, recognising those changes and knowing when the moment is right.

It’s one of the less visible parts of making our spirit, but an important one.

Long before there was a distillery here, there was the land.

Farmed by the same family for generations, it has always been at the heart of what we do.

Today, there may be a distillery, casks filling our warehouses and a very different future taking shape, but the fields remain the foundation of it all.

The distillery is simply the newest chapter in a much longer story.

Sometimes it’s worth stopping to appreciate where it all began.

A little update from the Farmers Weekly Awards…

We didn’t come away with the win this time, but our hearts are full.

Being in a room surrounded by so many people doing remarkable things across agriculture was genuinely humbling. Farming can be a tough and often thankless industry, and seeing so much talent, hard work and dedication recognised was a brilliant reminder of just how much is happening across the sector.

We’re incredibly proud of our team, our family and everything we’re building here at Balmaud and equally proud to have been recognised amongst such a brilliant group of finalists.

This is still only the beginning for us, and we’re incredibly excited to see what the future holds.

Congratulations again to all the winners and finalists, and thank you to everyone who continues to be part of our journey.

Over the years, it will develop its own character and become something completely individual to you.

Along the way, we’ll be there to sample it with you, share our experience and help you understand how your spirit is developing.

But ultimately, it’s your journey.

Every stage of what we make happens on the land our family has farmed for generations.

With Harvest recently finishing Wilson has been busy with the next stage.

Before the barley can be stored, it has to be dried to exactly the right moisture level. It's not a step most people ever see or think about, but skip it or rush it and everything that comes after is compromised.

Three generations of farming taught our family that quality isn't built in one moment, it's built one careful step at a time. Looking after the barley properly now is what gives us the right foundation before the grain ever reaches the distillery.

Wilson calls it his secret recipe. Really, it's just patience and knowing what you're doing but either way its dedication to the craft.

A big week for the Balmaud family.

This Thursday, we’ll be heading to the Farmers Weekly Awards 2026, where Balmaud is a finalist for Diversification Farmer of the Year.

For three generations, our family has farmed here near Turriff, growing malting barley for the Scotch wh**ky industry for more than 60 years. Balmaud Distillery is the next chapter in that story, taking what we already grow and know, and finding a new way to build upon it.

For us, diversification has never been about leaving farming behind. It’s about taking generations of knowledge, our connection to the land and our agricultural heritage forward with us.

To have that journey recognised by Farmers Weekly means a great deal to the whole family.

Whatever happens on Thursday, we’re incredibly proud to be standing alongside some fantastic farming businesses.

We’re incredibly proud to share that Balmaud Distillery, has been named a finalist for Diversified Farm of the Year at The Scottish Agriculture Awards 2026.

For generations, farming has been at the heart of our family. Balmaud is the next chapter in that story, taking our connection to the land, our agricultural knowledge and what we grow here on the farm, and building something new from those foundations.

To have that journey recognised within Scottish agriculture means a great deal to the whole family.
