But inside each one, the spirit continues to evolve.

Over time, its interaction with the oak helps shape the colour, flavour and character of the whisky it will eventually become.

The quiet part of the process is also one of the most important.

What exactly is a bonded warehouse?⁠

It’s more than simply somewhere casks are stored.⁠
⁠
Our bonded warehouse allows spirit to be securely held under duty suspension, within the regulations governing the storage and movement of alcohol as it matures.⁠
⁠
Here at Balmaud, our private casks remain securely stored on the estate, with each cask insured at purchase.⁠
⁠
And what enters the warehouse isn’t whisky yet. New make spirit must mature in Scotland in oak casks for a minimum of three years, alongside meeting the other legal requirements before it can be called Scotch whisky.⁠

A regulated space. Years of patience. An important part of the journey.⁠

The wait is almost over.

After months of growing, watching and waiting, we're now around 7–10 days from harvest.

The barley is nearly ready, but ultimately, nature still decides.

We'll continue to watch the crop and the conditions closely, and when everything aligns, we'll make the call.

For now, the fields are standing ready.

And so are we.
