Getting a good rub in after a hard day grazing

27/09/2026

A soggy day on the croft, but a bonnie sunset to make up for it. Definitely a day to hide in the polytunnel.

They say you never know what will happen next in farming. Today I found a coin all the way from in the honesty shop! How did it get all the way to our wee croft?

Getting ready for winter

All summer our cattle eat 100% grass. In winter they eat... 100% hay (dry grass). Meanwhile the bees get a health check and a duck breaks the croft record for biggest egg. That one is twice the size of a medium chicken egg!

Back in spring we hatched our first duckling brood. Now they are all grown up and have started to lay. A bit of practice still needed to catch up with our older ducks though.

Just moved the cattle; back's to the wind faces down getting lunch.

On today's menu is buttercup, vetch, trefoil, plantain, clover and... some other stuff. Why is it the smallest cattle are always the curious?

Find the eggs!

The ducks decided to start the day by playing hide and seek with their eggs. Here is a front and back view of the same grassy tussock. Having free roaming animals may be better for their welfare and the environment, but it does have some drawbacks.

That's no cow! Last week saw a change of role for Steve as he swapped cows for creels (lobster pots) helping on one of the last local boats working out of Gardenstown harbour.

Employee of the month!

On a wee forgotten corner of the croft this little ram pump works 24/7. No petrol or complex electronics, just two valves and a spring. Invented 250 years ago this little guy is the most important piece of kit we have and moves 100 litres of spring water an hour up to a big holding tank.
