Positive news regarding bTB, the latest document is on our website - link at bottom.
There were NO new laboratory-confirmed Bovine Tuberculosis (bTB) incidents reported in
camelids throughout the entirety of 2024. This positive outcome is further
supported by a nil return for infected camelids discovered during post-mortem examinations.
Notably, this continues a downward trend in camelid bTB cases observed since 2019.

This continued reduction in bTB amongst alpacas is a testament to the diligent biosecurity
measures adopted by herd owners such as badger proof fencing, disinfection, surveillance
Enferplex testing including whole herd, pre and post movement and post movement isolation.
Their consistent efforts have played a crucial role in maintaining healthy herds and reducing the
prevalence of the disease.

The British Alpaca Society is committed to the long term future of the alpaca industry and welcomes EU based alpaca associations to work together to ensure the steady flow of much needed new genetics between countries. The UK needs to import new genetics too and only by working together to share these genetics can we improve the productivity of the alpaca and drive towards a brighter and more sustainable future.

As a breed society focussed on welfare and good practice BAS is always trying to find ways to ensure every Alpaca is sold with as much useful information and back up as possible.

BAS started this initiative in January 2025, designed to promote correct welfare and selling practice β€œThe Trusted Alpaca Seller Scheme”. There are now 130 members signed up.

The scheme is designed to deliver a verified sales system for all BAS members and their customers. The voluntary scheme has a set of standards that all members can sign up to, which represent good ethical selling practice. The scheme is operated free of charge to BAS members and provides a benchmark for all to work to.

Every member can join the scheme, it will be administered free of charge by BAS and compliance will be verified by random β€œmystery shopper” type checks. Templates of required documentation are available in the members area (documents section) but you can, of course, use your own providing the correct information is included. Terms and conditions are also in the members area.
Benefits to members
Trusted Sellers will be listed on the BAS website, thus promoting your herd to anyone looking for Alpacas.
Prospective purchasers can access the list of Trusted Sellers on the BAS website.
