The new hens arrived on Wednesday afternoon, just 1 hour and 30 minutes after Sam had finished the final touches! 😂🐔

Bedding in, foot dips ready, perches up and enrichment blocks in place, all ready for the new girls.

These hen sheds take some putting back together, and with the packing shed so busy, a lot of the work ends up being done at nights and weekends. Sam does make it look quite easy, but as the saying goes.. “if it was easy, everyone would be doing it” 🙈

❤️🐔 Our story 🐔❤️

It all started with a shared love of farming when Sam & Emily met at Reaseheath College. Back then, Sam already had some chickens of his own. He proudly told Emily he had 200 hens—and she thought that was loads! Little did we know back then just how much that shared passion would grow! 😂❤️

We’ve built everything up from scratch since those college days, learning along the way, putting in plenty of hard work, and spending countless long days doing something we love.

Looking back at these pictures, it’s nice to see how much has changed since the very beginning. Life looked very different when we first started, but our love of farming, our chickens, and doing it all together has always been at the heart of it. From 200 hens to where we are now, we wouldn’t change a thing. 🐔❤️

The chickens get shut up as soon as it goes dark, and as the daylight hours get shorter, they naturally spend more time in their safe housing, away from Mr Fox! 🦊🐔

To keep them busy, we provide natural enrichment like Lucerne bales and chopped straw bedding, allowing them to peck and forage just as they would outdoors.

This isn’t compulsory for us as egg producers, but it’s something we do to keep our girls happy, busy and enriched, whatever the season 🍂

At Sam’s Hens, our girls always have the freedom to choose their own adventures, come rain or shine. 🌤️

🐔 Chicken shed update!🐔

Our new chickens have been delayed by a couple of weeks, which has turned out to be a blessing in disguise — giving us a little extra time to get their new hen house roof put on.

We’ve been waiting for a calm day to get stuck in, and this morning we finally got our wish. Out came the helpers (massive thanks to Clive, Eddie & Alex) and the job is DONE! 🔨🏡

There’s much relief all round, as the chickens will be arriving soon and we were starting to wonder if they’d be sleeping in the house with us! 😂

Just a couple of tweaks and a good wash and the chicken palace will be ready!

2026 Hen Re-homing Complete ✅

Back in early September we completed our last Hen Re-home of 2026, we’re proud to continue our commitment to re-home all of our chickens when it’s time for them to leave us.

Thank you to everyone who has helped us spread the word about our rehoming days and also to the Hen Re-homers who have travelled far and wide to collect some hens over the year.

We would love to hear how the girls are settling in! Drop an update or a photo in the comments below. If you have any feedback on the process this year, please let us know too.

Our next rehoming date should be Spring 2027, but we won’t be able to take any reservations until the new year, unfortunately, **we won’t have any more chickens for re-homing before that date**

BTS. So many people think we go round each shed collecting eggs with a lovely wicker basket every morning 😆

However, when there are so many eggs a day to collect we need something more advanced. Here’s a picture of the inside of a chicken nest box, eggs are laid in the nest box on some comfy carpet and the eggs then slowly roll down onto this belt (pictured), which Sam then winds up from the end.

The nestboxes are nice and dark so the chickens naturally lay their eggs in here- apart from the odd rule breaker who prefers to lay her eggs on the floor 🙈

And for anyone wondering…Emily is still waiting to get the picture of the shed WITH a roof! 🥴🥴

Free-range hens with absolutely no respect for paddock boundaries. 😂🐔

They’ve had their little adventure, and now they’re queuing up for Emily to let them back in… because apparently gates are everyone else’s responsibility. 🤦‍♀️🐓
