Unfortunately, you may have seen the recent news about people becoming ill after consuming IMPORTED eggs. As mentioned in a previous post, there has been a surge of (cheap) imported eggs into the UK recently, and not all of those countries sending eggs to the UK work to the same high standards as UK egg producers.

We’d like to reassure our customers that, as UK egg producers, we operate under the UK National Control Programme for Salmonella. This includes regular Salmonella monitoring (with our latest test on 13th August returning ‘not detected’), as well as strict annual audits by APHA officials to ensure we continue to meet the required Salmonella control standards.

If you’re ever unsure about the country of origin of your eggs, look at the stamp.

Explanation below:
The number is the method of production 1=free range
UK=produced in the UK
Unique producer number will follow 20384 in our case

As always, any questions, let us know.

The hot weather and drought are certainly affecting animals on farms across the country. You can see there’s very little grass growth happening at the moment.

Luckily, chickens aren’t too reliant on grass to survive. Their digestive system is programmed so that grass plays only a small part in their overall nutrition.

However, this does mean that we’re vulnerable to the grain markets. Low yields and poor growing conditions for arable farmers mean grain prices are volatile at the moment.

But farmers are resilient, and no matter what the weather throws at us, we’ll always try to find a way to carry on. 🌾🐔

🥚 **A little egg update!** 🥚

Unfortunately, we won’t have any more **small eggs** in the Egg Shack until approximately **mid-October**.

We need to prioritise our small eggs for our wholesale customers first, so we really appreciate your understanding. ❤️

The good news is… the **Egg Shack is still open as normal**, and we’ve still got plenty of our **BIG EGGS** available! 🐔🥚

Thank you for your continued support! 🥰

Nothing beats seeing our girls doing what they love best. 🐔🌿

At Sam’s Hens, our free-range chickens spend their days roaming, scratching, dust bathing, and enjoying plenty of fresh air. Happy hens mean healthy, delicious eggs – and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

This is free range life at its finest🥚

**🍓 New Stockist Alert! 🥚**

Great news for our customers in Stone & Stafford! You’ve been asking for a closer stockist, and we’re delighted to say you can now find our free range eggs at Canalside Farm

We visited this morning to ‘pick our own’ strawberries – it’s definitely worth a visit! 🍓

For those wondering how the new shed project has been going...

Well... let’s just say the hens have been more productive than we have! 😅

To be completely honest, the shed build hasn’t really got off the ground. A few things came along and completely stole our motivation, so the project has been sitting patiently waiting for us.

But today we’ve dusted ourselves off and started laying out what feels like a life-sized jigsaw puzzle. 🧩🔨

Over the next couple of weeks it’ll be full speed ahead as we get the shed built and ready for our new feathered ladies arriving in October. Fingers crossed there aren’t *too* many “where does this bit go?” moments! 🤞🐓

Stay tuned... hopefully the next update will include an actual shed rather than just a pile of scrap! 😂

A little reminder from our family to yours ❤️

Please remember, we’re a family business – not a huge corporate making millions.

Over the past couple of months, we’ve noticed that the takings from our egg shack have been consistently short. While we completely understand that genuine mistakes can happen, the pattern we’ve seen suggests this isn’t simply the result of occasional one-off errors.

If this continues, we may have to make significant changes to the way we operate.

It costs us around £2,000 every week just to feed our chickens. When we’re regularly short-changed, it all adds up and may ultimately affect our ability to continue providing fresh eggs through the egg shack long term.

We’re incredibly grateful to the vast majority of our customers who are honest, pay the correct amount, and continue to support our family business. We simply ask that if you use the egg shack, you pay the correct amount for what you take.

Thank you for your understanding and for helping us keep the egg shack open and based on trust. 🥚🐔❤️

Hi to all of our loyal egg shack visitors. Between the 23rd-26th July it’s going to be quite difficult to get to us due to a number of road closures for the LIV golf event.

Please bear this in mind if you’re planning on visiting over these dates, we will have plenty if you want to increase your order if you plan to visit over the next 10 days. Please just remember to store them in the fridge to maintain quality with the heat. Our local stockists will also be well stocked.

Please note this also means it’s going to be difficult for us to make any wholesale deliveries over these dates, so please monitor your stock and if you need to increase your order please let us know before the dates.

Thanks for your continued support, Sam & Emily x
