Maynards Fruits

Maynards Fruits Maynards is a family fruit farm which was started by David and Mary back in 1952. Kris does much of the tractor driving and heavy work around the farm.

When they came there were no buildings and no fruit, but the site had the right elevation for avoiding spring frosts, and was also a beautiful place! As well as building up the first pick your own business in the country they had four children (Judi, Tom, Chris and Bill) who helped (and sometimes hindered!) the farm as they grew up, and Tom decided to come and join the business after his studies a

nd working abroad for a while. He and his wife Alison also built a house on the farm and brought up their three sons (Andrew, Sam and Fred) so a good part of the workforce was family labour, and least until they decided to move to London! And as the wider family is spread about the world and often comes back to Ticehurst in the summer, customers may be served by Maynard cousins of all ages. Cathy, who looks after customers coming to the farm through the summer also picks, prunes and plants through the year, so can answer most of your questions about what is going on. And each year we have a number of temporary students on the farm, especially during the plum season when we are picking for the supermarkets. As well as pick your own and supplying local shops and businesses, we grow plums for the supermarkets and blackcurrants for Ribena. The business is continually evolving to meet the needs of our customers, our family and our community. We hope you share our love of this family farm.

We are sad to announce the death of David Maynard at the age of 96.

David and Mary bought 40 acres of derelict land in Ticehurst in 1953 and over more than 70 years built up the beautiful family fruit farm that continues to this day.

Pick Your Own was unheard of before David started Maynards Farm in the early 1960s, and he was proud to share the fruits of his labours with so many happy customers over the years.

A fruitful life in so many ways... raise a glass to a great man.

We may have some one off days open over the next few weeks (in particular there are some raspeberries still to come) and will advertise when they occur. Otherwise, see you next year!

It may feel like the end of the summer, but there are still plenty of plums, apples and cobnuts to pick!

Our pears are also perfect to pick now, and we have a wide variety for all tastes (Red Williams, Del Saveur and Conference).

For the enterprising, we also have some strawberries from the second fruiting of the year- don't expect many but those that are there are delicious. Our Autumn Bliss raspberries we planted this spring are finally coming into crop-  time for one pick before the end of the season!

Open Tuesday- Sunday, 10-5.

We expect to have our last regular day open of the season on the 14th September, so come while you can!
