The Bravery of a Wallasey Wartime Police Constable

34 year old Police Constable Eric Leslie Valantine of 10 Bletchley Avenue made a heroic attempt to rescue a young Wallasey lady named Joan Boote on Friday 20 August 1943. He was on Cycle Patrol at Harrison Drive when he was called to the scene. Seeing the girl in difficulties, he removed his cap, tunic, leather leggings and boots and plunged into the rough water, swimming out to the girl.

However, his breeches had filled with water and caused him to sink beneath the waves and he was drowned. Miss Boote was also drowned. The sea was very rough at the time which led the Chief Constable to say of him at the Inquest " ..... that he must have had the heart of a lion." The Constable left a widow and two young children aged five and a half and four years. He was a devoted husband and father.

The Wallasey News, with the permission of Mr. Ormerod, set up an 'In Memoriam Fund', which Mrs Valantine used for the children. She also received a small pension from the Carnegie Hero Trust Fund.

He will be remembered for his bravery and is buried at Rake Lane Cemetery.

A Wallasey Hero of WW2

Flight Sergeant Ray Holmes ran out of am******on when he was in the thick of a 'dog-fight' over London on Sunday, 15 September, 1940. So he decided to ram his Hurricane fighter into a Dornier bomber. This caused both planes to crash, but Holmes and some of the crew members of the bomber managed to bail out. Holmes landed near the Oval Cricket Ground and it is said that he then called in at a nearby pub for a quick pint. All this caught the imagination of the public and he was feted as having saved Buckingham Palace from being attacked.
