It's one of my favourite times of year - the rams have been in with the ewes and are coming out tomorrow. The sheep all look great - all that summer rain and recent mild weather has left us with plenty of grass heading into the winter - and the sheep are in fantastic condition... hopefully the rams have done well and plenty of good sized healthy twins will be arriving in February....

On Wednesday I put the rams in with the ewes. I never like to make life easy - I only have 31 pedigree Cotswold ewes - which in the world of rare breed sheep means I have a 'large flock'! It should be quite simple - in the normal commercial sheep world one ram would happily cover all of them... but no... because I always want to see what particular combinations of bloodlines produce, in the hope that one day I will breed a true 'Champion' - I spend ages deciding which of my girls will go with no less than 6 different rams..! Many headaches and cups of coffee (and occasionally something stronger) later I have the list... then I have all the sheep in the right fields (I hope!!) and now it's up to the boys!...... So what do I find when I go down to check how the lovebirds are doing? They all seem to be gazing longingly through the fences at the girls next door, just like this shearling ram!!!

Yesterday we took two of our shearling ewes to Cirencester Market for our Show and Breed Sale. It was a scorching hot day but Voyce Pullin had made good provision for the extreme conditions and all the sheep were penned in the relative cool of the main building. We knew it was going to be a difficult day, with the current drought and lack of grass, combined with soaring energy costs making winter feeding looking ever more expensive - this was not a great time to be selling stock! However, I am delighted to say that our Queenford ewes did very well with Queenford Una making £450 having been made Breed Champion - while Queenford Udelia made an amazing £480. Overall however, it was a challenging day with some good sheep going home unsold and prices fetched by others, disappointing.

I guess we are all wondering what the weather next year is going to throw at us....!

Our second batch of freezer-ready lambs will be ready for collection on Friday 19th August. If you like to know that the lamb you are eating was looked after to the highest welfare standards, then maybe you would like to try one of our freezer ready lamb boxes? Cotswold lamb is tender, delicious and delicately flavoured.

You can order a whole or half lamb and a variety of different cuts including any combination of whole or half joints, racks of lamb and chops... This year the price is £8 per kg meaning a standard 17kg lamb would cost £136. If you would like further information please contact me - all lambs must be pre-ordered!

The other day all the animals on the farm seemed to be behaving extremely strangely. Here Queenford Rufus was happily sunbathing against the gate - he was not going to move for anyone... and as he weighs over 140kg no one was going to argue!!!

It's been all go here on the farm since The Oxford Boat Adventure moved in and the fields and lakes filled with groups of happy, busy children having the time of their lives...! The sheep however, seem less excited about the goings on. This ram, Queenford Travis, has certainly turned his back on all the watery fun and games behind him.
