Harvest Moon is a lovely round pumpkin with classic deep orange skin and strong ribbing, the kind you picture when you think of Halloween. It’s a good looking variety with sweet, smooth flesh that’s perfect for soups, roasting, or pies. The flavour is rich without being too strong, and it cooks down beautifully.

It also holds up well as a decorative pumpkin, making it a great all rounder for both the kitchen and the doorstep. A proper traditional pumpkin that earns its name every season.

Hundredweight is the big one, a traditional giant pumpkin that really lives up to its name. It’s the variety people often grow for size competitions or for a real showstopper in autumn displays. Ours aren’t that big though! We only planted a few of these… just to see what happened!

Despite its size, the flesh is still tasty. Pale orange, mildly sweet, and good for soups or purée if you’re cooking on a large scale. It’s more of a statement piece than an everyday kitchen pumpkin, just don’t try lifting it with a bad back.

Honey Bear is a small acorn type squash with dark green skin and sweet, golden orange flesh inside. It’s bred to be rich and full-flavoured, slightly nutty with a hint of honey, as the name suggests.

The compact size makes it perfect for roasting whole or halved, and it’s great for stuffing or serving as individual portions. It also looks lovely in autumn displays with its deep colour and neat shape. A great little squash for both looks and taste.

Crown Prince is one of the best all round squash varieties you can grow. Pale blue-grey on the outside and a deep, rich orange inside. It has a dense, sweet flesh that’s brilliant for roasting, soups, or curries, and it keeps its texture nicely when cooked. The flavour is slightly nutty and almost caramel like when roasted.

It also stores really well, often lasting right through winter if kept somewhere cool and dry. With its elegant colour and tidy shape, it looks great in autumn displays too, but it’s far too tasty to leave just for decoration!

Uchiki Kuri, (we’ve grown a type called Red October) is a lovely little Japanese squash. Bright orange-red, teardrop shaped, and just the right size for a family meal. Its name means “red chestnut,” which fits perfectly because the flavour is sweet, nutty, and rich, a bit like roasted chestnuts.

The flesh is smooth and silky, great for soups, roasting, or mashing, and the skin is thin enough to eat once cooked. It’s a cheerful looking squash that brightens up any autumn display, but it’s also one of the best tasting ones for everyday cooking.

Spitfire is a small to medium-sized pumpkin with bright orange skin and a tidy, round shape. A real standout in the patch. It’s bred for both looks and flavour, with smooth, sweet flesh that’s ideal for roasting, soups, or baking.

The skin is firm enough to store well, but it’s easy to cut and cook. It’s a great all round variety, compact, colourful, and full of that classic pumpkin taste that makes autumn cooking so good.

Queensland Blue is an Australian classic! Squat, ribbed, and a beautiful dusty blue-grey on the outside (I managed to pick a green coloured one to photograph 🤦‍♂️), with bright orange flesh inside. It’s a firm, dry pumpkin with a lovely nutty flavour that holds up well in roasting and baking, and it makes excellent mash or soup.

The skin is tough (you’ll need a good knife to get into it), but that helps it store really well through the winter. It’s less commonly seen here in West Wales, but it’s one of our favourites for both eating and adding a splash of colour to autumn displays.

Polar Bear is a striking white pumpkin that really stands out in the patch. It starts off creamy and deepens to a bright, snowy white as it cures. Perfect for displays, especially when mixed with colourful varieties. It’s a big pumpkin with firm, pale orange flesh that’s mild and slightly sweet, great for soups, roasting, or pies.

It also stores well, keeping its colour and shape long after harvest. A lovely choice if you want something that looks clean and modern but still tastes properly like autumn.

Kabocha is a Japanese squash with deep green skin and bright orange flesh. Dense, sweet, and full of flavour. It’s often described as tasting like a mix between pumpkin and sweet potato, with a smooth texture that’s great for soups, roasting, or tempura.

The skin softens when cooked, so you don’t need to peel it, and it stores really well through the colder months. A firm favourite in the kitchen. Rich, comforting, and perfect for hearty autumn meals.

We don’t have many of these left now, so grab one while you still can!

Delicata is one of the handiest squash varieties to cook with. Small, pretty, and quick to prepare. Its cream coloured skin with green stripes looks lovely, and best of all, you don’t need to peel it! The skin softens when roasted. The flesh is sweet and smooth, with a flavour somewhere between sweet potato and butternut.

It’s great sliced into rings and roasted, stuffed and baked, or even added to salads once cooked. They don’t store as long as the hard-skinned varieties, so they’re best enjoyed through autumn when they’re at their freshest.

Casperita is a small, ghostly white pumpkin that looks like it’s been made for autumn displays. It’s smooth and round, about the size of a large apple, and pairs beautifully with the darker, more colourful varieties.

Despite its decorative look, it’s just as good to eat. The flesh is pale orange, sweet, and slightly nutty, perfect for roasting or baking whole. It’s also a nice size for individual portions, so you can serve one per person for something a bit special.

A tidy little pumpkin that’s as charming on the table as it is on the plate.
