I hate posting negative, but today really does feel like a big moment for a lot of local businesses and entrepreneurs.
This year has been another record breaker for us in turnover. We’re growing, we’re ploughing on, and we’re so grateful for that 🙏 But behind the scenes, the pressure is huge!
Wages and employer contributions have gone up by around £40,000 this year alone.
Rents have jumped 20% this year.
Packaging, insurance, diesel, compliance all up 📈
And with business rates discounts still uncertain for next year, every owner I speak to is bracing for what comes next.
What’s been toughest to watch is how many good restaurants and independents we’ve lost. Not because they went bankrupt owing thousands, just because they quietly decided “It’s not bloody worth the fight anymore.”
That’s the saddest part. It’s a sign of the times, a warning signal, and a reminder that hospitality needs real support! Especially around VAT if we want to give them a fighting chance.
For us, we remain resilient. We adapt, just like we always have. Many of you followed us through lockdowns and saw that firsthand. Sustaining that mindset is exhausting and it’s just been tested year after year.
To everyone who continues to supports us week in, week out, genuinely, thank you.
Your loyalty means we can keep growing as a family business while speaking up for those who don’t always have a voice.
We’re trying not to be negative Nancy.
But many businesses are at breaking point and they deserve attention before it’s too late.
I would like to mention I have taken this post from a fellow greengrocer from up north who I have watched grow and get on with things. Thank you boys and good luck moving forward.
