North Devon Queens

North Devon Queens North Devon Queens was set up in 2021 by Kacper and Matt who are passionate about bees. Our goal is to produce the finest quality british bred queens and nucs.

We both have been rearing queens separetly for a few years and we decided to team up.

We’ve moved some of our hives to the oilseed r**e fields! We’re looking forward to the bees pollinating the crops and hopefully producing some delicious honey.

Our strongest colonies were so eager that they started storing nectar even before the move, which is a fantastic sign. Now, we’re just rooting for some lovely sunny weather over the next few weeks to keep that momentum going!

The “poly nucs” you see in the second photo are doing great, too. We’ll be moving them into full-sized national hives in the next few days to give them plenty of room to grow. With swarming season just around the corner, it’s an exciting and busy time ahead!

Finally the sun came out which meant we could get out and look at the bees for the first time this year.
We checked around a third of our hives today and 90% have come through the winter well - the ones that didn’t were generally weaker anyway.
I am pleased so far but the winter isn’t quite over yet!

Great day today in Telford. Lovely to meet and speak to many beekeepers who are as excited about the season ahead as we are ☀️ 🐝
Next year I will spend less time chatting and try to take some better photos!

Found this short video of me putting a swarm of bees into a skep back in 2021. Skeps have always meant a lot to me - my great‑grandfather used to make them, and I’m lucky enough to still have one of his in good condition. I remember seeing them as a child and becoming completely fascinated. That curiosity is what sparked my beekeeping journey 14 years ago.

Had an enjoyable evening talking about queen rearing with the North Devon branch of the Devon beekeepers association.
It was a great turn out and lots of good questions at the end.
Thanks for all the cake 🍰
