Hunterston Castle

Hunterston Castle Hunterston Castle ancient home of the Hunters of Hunterston, Chiefs of Clan Hunter

02/09/2026

The swifts and swallows have been nesting around Hunterston Castle. The parent birds have been giving flying lessons to their young. Last week visitors, went up to the parapet - we were surrounded by the birds swooping and wheeling over the roofs and grass.

They will leave (the birds not the visitors!) to go to back to sub-Saharan Africa. Making a journey of about 6000 miles, it will take them about 6 weeks. It’s incredible to think that their internal compass is pre programmed since they were developing in the egg.

Fortunately it doesn’t take quite so long for our visitors to reach the castle. The bookings for next year from 1st March - 30th September are now on line. Go to https://www.clanhunterscotland.com/book-a-visit/

Last week, Laurie and David visited from Iowa.
The tour of Hunterston Castle fulfilled a destination on their 'places to visit' wish-list. They were being carefully watched over by the Hunterston Stag in the Castle Great Hall.

Thanks for visiting us, and do come back.

At the beginning of June, new residents moved into Hunterston Castle. They quickly built an extension on the outside corner of the bedroom window. Within weeks the parent birds were flying backwards and forwards feeding their hungry family. The noisy nest dwellers grew larger and 2 days ago the nest was visibly moving when the parent birds arrived for snack time. Feathers and beaks began bursting out of the opening, and today the inevitable happened. The young swifts have outgrown their nest.
They are now settled on the castle bedroom window sill and posed for their photographs. 🐦📷

Finally both Bill and his luggage were reunited, in time for his return journey. Thanks for being such good company Bill and entertaining us with your recounting of your travel experience. Come back and visit soon.
