I’d had my eyes on this one since we first graded it out at just a couple of inches long. I might have even told .1 that it was my favorite fish of the year class —which, considering some of the others, is a bold statement. Now residing in Stoneacres, I can’t wait to see it fulfill its full potential.

I’ve said it many times before, but the rarity of these petal scaled ones never ceases to amaze me.

We only got a handful from a huge spawning, but I suppose that’s exactly what makes them so incredibly special.

Luckily, they do seem slightly more likely to occur within the bloodline, so hopefully we can bring a few more on in the future.

This one now resides in Christchurch.

I’ve observed many times before just how unpredictable — and unstable — the petal/starburst scale type can be.

They shift, appear, disappear… never quite settling, especially on young fish…

But these Linch fish are on another level — changing more than I’ve ever seen. What was initially a fairly plain-looking linear is now one of the most spectacularly scale-spangled examples I’ve ever come across.

That’s the real excitement of observing this trait within the Linch bloodline — we’re never quite sure what we might discover next!

Crazy to think how many “plain mirrors” that might not have made the grade could, by now, be covered in scales.

When one of the UK’s most-watched pond YouTubers got in touch asking if I could sort him out with a few special fish for a new grow-on project, I knew I wanted to pull something special together.

The timing couldn’t have been better — space was getting tight here, and knowing the fish were heading to an experienced keeper with an incredible setup made the decision a lot easier.

A few of them were actually potential future brood fish that I never planned to let go, but being able to now watch them develop over on Frank’s YouTube channel is going to be amazing!
