Starside Polled Simmentals

Starside Polled Simmentals Since long before starting my pedigree herd of Simmentals I have been interested in breeding polled (naturally hornless) cattle.

Therefore I have specifically selected animals with the polled gene for my pedigree herd right from the start and the herd now has a high percentage of natural polls. The first Simmental on the farm was Tidkin Augustus, purchased in 1991 as a sweeper bull for the dairy herd. The first polled Simmentals were Blackcragg Carlande and her son Tidkin History who made a wonderful bull, but unfortunately

broke his leg and had to be put down before we decided to go down the pedigree route. The start of the pedigree herd occurred with the purchase of Cairnview Eilidh and Atlow Katy at Carlisle in May 2000. Our four main cow families descend from purchases of cattle originating from the Atlow, Heathbrow, Cairnview and Moorside herds. In early 2020 we made the decision to stop registering our calves as pedigree and left the breed society. Our breeding policies haven't changed, just none of our younger animals have the official piece of paper to prove pedigree.

Back to calving again with our oldest cow, S. Hyades (mother of Lykos and grandmother of Raphael). Never makes it easy for herself, doesn't Hyades. Three years ago, she had a backwards calf, that was quite a difficult calving, then last year we took the decision to do a caesarean as it was borderline that her calf would come the natural way, and then this year a backwards calf again. At least this fellow wasn't too difficult a birth though.

Another photo from the past of a foundation cow, Heathbrow Sunny. The difference between her and Cairnview Eilidh is that all of her descendants here trace back to her via her sons as she only had one daughter. We used two of her sons here, Cepheus and Pollux. Both of our current bulls, Loki and Raphael, go back to her via Pollux as well as Justina and Klaia, and several cows go back via Cepheus.

A change to the photos of our current cows and calves. This photo from 2000 is of one of our foundation cows, Cairnview Eilidh. Definitely THE foundation of our herd as all but four animals on the farm (Klaia, Justina and her calf, Thor, and the bull, Loki) trace back to her either through their sire or their dam. She came to us with a bull calf (Annick Lomond) at foot, but while she was with us she had 11 heifer calves, so there's no wonder her legacy still continues.
