Hay bales put out for winter grazing. Like last winter, the cattle will again be fed this winter with bales of hay left out. This means all their food is already in the field and we don't need to drive over it. If the cattle are moved every day, they won't poach the field. It also means they will always have a mix of hay and fresh grass to eat. Less damage to the ground and less poaching plus lower carbon footprint.

A personal note from your local Farmer:

The butchery will again be open on 10 and 11 October for the third of this year's meat sales. Please order in advance if at all possible and we hope to see many of you there! Please do tell your friends about us.. word of mouth is always the best advert.

The beef is from a 30 month Belted Galloway and the lambs are Black Welsh/Romney Crosses.

Leigh will be butchering... lots of roasting joints and stewing cuts. If you are buying a box of beef, we will put in a mix of joints, mince, stewing cuts and steaks..any particular requests, note at checkout and we will endeavour to meet! Lamb - let us know if there are bits you don't like.. breast is mine..but breast made into greek burgers with lamb and feta.. or breast stuffed and its a different conversation .. so let us know!

We will also be getting some gammons in and some whole chickens from Adlington's. Please let me know if you would like either.

News from the farm...Angus' regenerative grazing practices saved the day with the very dry spring and summer conditions...and we are now over seeding with grasses that will be more drought resistant and that are particularly suited to calcareous ground...this is both on the horse and the cattle/sheep ground. The species chosen are for their compatibility with the ground but also include plants that are natural wormers or support the gut health of lambs and calves...our aim is not to be organic but to reduce our dependence on external inputs as much as possible.

We are using no added fertilisers and there is a general move to reducing our carbon footprint...electric trucks and tractors aren't really there yet in development..but electric bikes are a lot of fun and have meant a big reduction in the use of pick ups on the ground and diesel use generally.

So, I hope we'll see you in a couple of weeks time!
