Our fourth and final cria of the year arrived in a speedy, textbook delivery on Wednesday morning! Iowa gave birth to a beautiful glossy black female, weighing 7.5kg, whom we’ve named Ophelia (AKA Lia)

Ophelia is settling in well to life on the outside world and is enjoying chasing around with the other three cria already!

Welcome to the herd! 🤩

Dam: Woodbine Iowa (Solid Mid Brown)
Sire: Froyz Ottis (True Black)
Cria: Queenholme Ophelia (Solid Black)

It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster week at the farm, and I’ve delayed posting about our new arrival just in case things didn’t work out.

Kiki gave birth to a female cria last Friday afternoon, with the delivery requiring a little assistance at the end stage. She is the smallest cria we have had, weighing just 5.9kg and we soon noticed that she was quite wobbly on her back legs and wasn’t strong enough to feed herself.

After a few days of round the clock bottle feeding (milking Kiki and then feeding it to her baby every 2-3 hours) she finally got the strength to start feeding herself. Although her mobility is still a little bit unsteady, she is getting stronger and gaining weight every day. We are hopeful that she will continue to improve and gain full mobility of her legs, but for now, we celebrate this little miracle.

We welcome Queenholme Cleopatra (AKA Cleo) who joins our other Shakespearean cria; Montague and Hector.

He finally has a name! Hector made his arrival on the farm on Friday, and shortly after birth we noticed that his ears were a little bit wonky and were twisted facing outwards. A fairly common occurrence in newborn cria, but not something we had seen before. On Sunday we decided to gently tape them into place to get them into the correct position. Today the tape was removed and the result was what we wanted! Perfectly straight ears! Take a look through the photos at the before and after photos (he was absolutely unfazed by the whole thing)

Welcome to the herd, Hector!

This week, we had first year vet student, Kira, join us for a week of EMS (Extra Mural Studies) as part of her course at Liverpool University School of Veterinary Science.

EMS placements are a vital part of the veterinary degree as they provide opportunities for students to gain experience and practice the skills they have learnt in ‘real world situations’. Kira has got stuck in with routine husbandry tasks and handling, as well as helping out with our school visits.

Today we had scheduled in our own vets, Jack and Hannah, to carry out some dentistry work on the male alpacas, which Kira could observe. Well, during their visit, Ixia, one of our female alpacas decided to give birth! What a busy morning! 😅 A bonus for Kira too!

All went smoothly with the birth and Ixia had a black male cria whom is yet to be named. Vet Jack (who qualified from Liverpool in 2023) couldn’t resist a photo with the new arrival, with proud Aunty Phoenix posing alongside 🥰

With two cria left to arrive, I wonder if we will have some females? Updates on our latest boy when he dries out!

Our first cria of 2024 has arrived! 🤩

Inferno gave birth to this gorgeous male cria early this morning and he was up and running around in record time! This is Inferno’s fourth cria (Eclipse, Atlas and Chewpacca) and all have been textbook births and she has proved to be an attentive and protective mother.

With our name theme being Shakespeare this year, we have decided to name this little one Montague, or Monty for short!

Dam: Woodbine Inferno (True Black)
Sire: Putjade Neville (Mid Silver Grey)
Cria: Queenholme Montague (Rose Grey)

Bright and early this morning, we made the journey to the beautiful Norfolk Coast to deliver our ‘Star Wars boys’ (Kylo, Chewie and Solo) to their new home 🏡

It’s always a little sad to say goodbye to our alpacas, but we know they have gone to an amazing place where they will be very loved and cared for by their new owners. We wish them the best of luck and lots of fun with their herd 🥰

That’s shearing done for another year ✔️

All 23 alpacas received smart new haircuts, a manicure and annual vaccinations. The beautiful sunny skies above made the job so much easier too!

And no shearing day would be complete without a dust bath treat afterwards. Some very happy and content alpacas! ☺️

T’was the night before shearing, and all of the alpacas were excited for their annual haircut 🤩 Thankfully the milder temperatures look like they are here to stay now…just in time!

The sun has finally arrived at the farm which has been such a welcome relief after the recent deluge of rain! Apparently we had the wettest February on record - I would definitely agree with that! ☔️

Our three male cria have been doing really well since they left their mums, and they have grown so much! I have been doing some halter work with Kylo, Chewpacca and Solo, with varying degrees of success 😂😅 Training any animal takes plenty of time, patience and love…but it’s always worth it when all of the learning falls into place 🤩
