Let’s talk about the Albillo grape variety 🍇. The Albillo refers to a family of white grape variety. In this instance, as with the beautiful Valduero Blanco, the Albillo Mayor is used. In 2019 Albillo Mayor became the first white grape to be approved for DO wines in Ribera del Duero. The variety accounts for around 500 hectares of the region’s total vineyard area of 25,000 hectares. Vines are typically 50-years-old or even older, including some pre-*phylloxera vineyards, and often located alongside Tempranillo vines.

The harvest for the Albillo typically occurs early, starting mid-to-late August (Valduero harvest first week of October). The yield is low and scarce, making the harvest a challenging and labor-intensive task across old vineyards. The Valduero Blanco is aged on its lees (bâtonnage) for a creamy texture and great aromatic depth.

Some producers blend a small proportion of Albillo Mayor with their red wines for freshness and acidity 🍷

*Pre-phylloxera wine comes from grapevines that grow on their own original European roots rather than grafted American rootstocks. These rare vines survived a 19th-century insect plague or grow in isolated sandy or volcanic soils where the pest cannot live
