Sitting for a couple of hours, stuck on the A31, watching a massive cloud of smoke rise into the sky got me thinking about air quality. There are things we can do to create the best quality atmosphere in our homes, to protect our families. Wildfires are a more seasonal problem but the burning of fossil fuels, greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture, incinerators, traffic pollution even VOC's from household products mean that air quality is an issue all year round.

Things to do:

Everyone should have a houseplant in there bedroom at the very least, but the more in your home the better! Spider plants are particularly good at cleaning the air and are a great option for the less green fingered of us.

Diffusers are also really beneficial for air quality, the moisture they release reform around particles in the air and drag them to the floor. Leaving the air cleaner and particle free. Adding a few drops of an essential oil is also a really great way to add fragrance naturally, avoiding VOC's.

Another top tip and personal favourite are Beeswax Candles. Believe it or not they clean the air too! Beeswax, when its burnt, releases negative ions into the air which latch onto impurities dragging them to the floor in much the same way water vapour does. They give a beautiful golden light and have their own delicate fragrance too.

It's officially World Refill Day and we've got 5 simple swaps to help you move away from single use plastic:

1) 💦 Buy a reusable water bottle and refill at home or on-the-go, and never buy a single-use bottle of water again. Check out the new water refill fountain in town!

2) 🐟 Bring a reusable container to the counter of your supermarket, butcher’s or fishmonger’s and ask them to serve your items into it.

3) ☕️ Grab a reusable cup for your morning coffee, instead of using throwaway ones... don't forget to ask for a discount.

4) 🚿 If you don't fancy giving shampoo bars a go, some independent shops offer refillable shampoo, conditioner and body wash, so you can refill your old shampoo bottle. Spill The Beans

5) 🥛 Order plant or dairy milk to be delivered in glass bottles from your local milk delivery

So now we can concentrate on the fun stuff!

We’re hoping to make this year an extra special extravaganza of gatherings, promotions and seminars to celebrate our 50th Anniversary!!

We never would have dreamed from our humble beginnings on a market stall in the long, hot summer of 1976 that our shop would still be bustling all these years later. Our little family business is more and more relevant all the time with health, environment and wholefood diet vs ultra processed foods very much at the forefront of public interest right now.

Watch out for posts about our upcoming events as soon as we get them finalised. There will be a focus on education this year to help pass on some of the knowledge we’ve gained.

Our modern world constantly reinvents itself as the ‘latest’, ‘the newest’, ‘the brightest’ but we’re happy to be a fixed point in space and time here at Spill the Beans and keep offering our free impartial advice (to anyone who’ll listen!) just like we always have.
