Our aim is to support people to achieve their full potential, regardless of their needs or history within a safe but stimulating farm environment, enabling everyone to make a valuable contribution and be part of the team whilst improving their health, fitness and social skills. This is achieved by providing farming related work opportunities and recreational activities on the smallholding known as
Holtwood Community Farm, which is 14 acres of land tenanted from Dorset County Council. Service Users have the opportunity to:
Work and interact with the farm and domestic animals;Grow fruit, plants and vegetables from seed to harvesting;Take part in building projects; Paint and maintain buildings and machinery;Help with fencing; Complete basic woodwork activities; Interact socially with other service users and staff; Join in walks and off site visits;Play musical instruments and take part in Art and craft activities; Be out in the fresh air and open spaces, learning about and experiencing their environment. Holtwood Community Farm was set up in 2010 by Nigel and Vanessa Pritchard building on Nigel’s experience as Course Tutor at Kingston Maurward College and the setting up and operation of the Walled Garden at Moreton which provided a similar experience on a smaller scale. Nigel and Vanessa both have lifelong experience in Agriculture and Management with Vanessa having also spent a decade working in Education. We are both passionate about creating a unique experience for our Clients in which they can develop their abilities so increasing their self-esteem through their achievements. They consider attending the farm as “Coming to Work” and are involved in all aspects of farm life. Our Clients are normally referred by Social Services but also by private recommendations. They have varied needs and those needing particular one to one support attend with their own support worker including those requiring medication. They attend the farm between 9am and 3.30pm between one and 6 days a week depending on their needs and finances. In addition to Nigel and Vanessa there are 4 members of staff with differing areas of responsibility. Because of our high staffing levels we can facilitate smaller groups and even one to one for certain activities. Clients rotate between groups during the day in order to take part in different activities. Dependent on the task, they may be mixed abilities but consideration is always given to groupings with regard to their temperaments and needs. A level of good behaviour is expected in order to maintain safety and enjoyment for all. Adult Community Services at DCC have said we have unprecedented staffing levels. If you or someone you know is interested in attending the farm, please contact us and arrange to visit for a taster session.
