Happy World Bannock Day!

This is only the second ever World Bannock Day, launched last year by food writers and historians to celebrate our very own Orcadian, Florence Marian McNeill.

Born in Holm in 1885, at a time when there were few paths open to women, she forged her own way - writing, researching, and recording the everyday food and traditions that might otherwise have been lost.

She is well known as the author of The Scots Kitchen, an encyclopaedic record of Scotland's culinary heritage. Like so many women in history, her work isn't always spoken about as much as it should be. Thanks to her, dishes like bannocks were recognised as something worth remembering.

Here in Orkney, bere bannock recipes have been carefully passed down through generations. A staple which is still enjoyed warm from the pan with butter and jam or cheese.

Last night I was invited to the Premiere of the King’s new documentary “Finding Harmony; A King’s Vision.”

This is an important documentary, not only because it lays out the history of our broken food systems, but because it provides a road map for tested solutions to repair those systems. Scotland is not immune to climate change. We are facing an ecological disaster.

If you want to know more about this work, make sure you follow and make time to watch the documentary, streaming Feb 6 on Prime.

A 1930s Hebridean Halloween

Margaret Fay Shaw, an American photographer and folklorist, moved to the western isles in the 1930s with her husband, John Lorne Campbell. Her photographs and studies of the local culture form some of the most valuable insights we have into early 20th century rural celebrations.

It goes to show; sometimes you need someone from out of town to see what is special about your community.

High Ho for Halloween, sang by , was a song sung by guisers, captured in F Marian McNeills “Hallowe’en”.
